I am a veterinary student, and I read this book to see what types of resources will be available to my future clients. I gave this book three stars because the overall message of it is pretty accurate, but I couldn't give it five stars because there are lots of factual errors in this book that would lead a potential client to maybe pursue the wrong line of treatment for their pet. I have gotten in trouble for directly quoting books in their reviews, so I will avoid that, but all I can say is the demodex threatens the quality of life for your pet, and treatment is very easy. However, that being said, the chemicals we use to treat demodex are potentially life threatening in a lot of animals (kudos to the author for mentioning the MDR1 gene mutation). This does not mean you should not treat!!! Demodex won't just "go away naturally" and if often recurring throughout the life of the animal. It IS bad for quality of life. If you need more resources pertaining to this, be sure to check out some scholarly articles that have been peer-reviewed (check out google scholar) or ask your veterinarian.
Treating dog skin diseases externally is not enough to totally heal it, it is also essential to treat dogs with mange by giving them the right diet to improve their immune system. A stronger immune system would make them healthier inside and could prevent them from acquiring any types of diseases -- good lesson I got from this book. “Mange:Understanding and Treating Demodectic Mange in Dogs” is a very informative book explaining what mange is and its treatments. It provided symptoms, treatments and prevention for each types of mange which were easy-to-understand. It also provided what therapies can a dog go through to get rid of mites. If you think your dogs are showing signs of having parasites, this book could be very useful for you.
The author did a great job in taking a probably lesser known and possibly thought of as complex, canine skin disease and was able to artfully explain it in terms that were easy to understand. A great explanation of the causes, symptoms, and possible treatments were explored in detail. I found the chapter on Immune System Management particular informative and useful. If your pet it dealing with mange and you're seeking a better understanding of the disease I definitely suggest you check this book out!
With all the nonsense out there about mange it is comforting to read an authoritative pamphlet on what to do about it. I had been wondering, since mites are microscopic, how can we be sure we are rid of them? This pamphlet has the answers. Do follow the author's advice however, and still see your vet.
This book has detailed explanation about all types of Mange there is so you can have a clear understanding of the cause of the problem to treat it as best as you can. There are different treatment options included to understand better which is the best one for your dog. All in all, definitely worth the read!
This book is full of really great advice and contains all the information I've been looking for! In the past I have spent a fortune on vet treatments that have had no effect whatsoever and it has been awful to watch my dog suffer. Finally, I now have answers. A great explanation of the causes, symptoms, and possible treatments.
