4.0 out of 5 stars Long but Well Wrapped Up

Quick Thoughts: Overall the ending to this series was very good and I was pleased with the wrap up to the story. A lot of questions were answered and the action sequences in this book were awesome. However, I did have a few questions left over at the end and didn’t love it quite as much as everyone else.

Full Review: Alright. This book took me almost a month to rate or even review. I had many mixed feelings about this book after finishing it and I still feel like I’m sorting through them. I wanted to love the wrap up to this series after seeing so many glowing reviews online, but I got stuck. There were a lot of things I liked. For instance, the action and adventure in this series has always sucked me in. I feel like I can really visualize what is going on and Meyer has always given me a complete picture of this futuristic world. I ship all the ship especially the friendships and felt very satisfied with the conclusion of this story. However, I did have a few problems.

The fairytale interpretations throughout this series have been innovative and this installment is spot on as well. I love the elements of the Snow White fairytale we saw and the futuristic twist to the classic story too. However, there were a few points where scenes felt forced into the story to accommodate more parts of the fairytale. In some ways this story has become completely independent of the original stories so I found it a bit disruptive to be reminded this was a retelling. However, I felt very similarly at the end of Cinder and upon reread found it worked better for me.

My other issue with this book was the main couple. I had a really hard time with Jacin and Winter at first. There was so much character development and progress in Cress. I was already in the middle of so many stories and character arcs I had a hard time starting two new ones. Eventually I did like both of them and found their stories interesting. Plus Winter and Scarlet's friendship was a really interesting dynamic. I love Scarlet so as she and Winter spent more time together, I warmed up to Winter.

Like I mentioned though, the wrap up was well done. I liked the ending and how fast-paced and thrilling the conclusion was. There is a lot of drama and excitement in this wrap up. It is a long book so be prepared for emotional upheaval and lots of action. I was pleased about a lot of the decisions Meyer made for her characters and how the story panned out. I was satisfied with the conclusion of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Finale!

5 stars.

This was wonderful.

I was putting this off for a while, mainly because finale's usually don't deliver for me. Plus I felt mostly 'meh' on Fairest, however, I really loved Cress, and I wanted to see where all these characters ended up. So when Tome Topple came around again this year, I made this priority #1.

Winter and Jacin, Cinder and Kai are the main characters in this story, while Scarlet/Wolf and Cress/Thorne are in this a lot too I felt they were more secondary characters.

Normally when I'm reading a multi-POV novel there is one or two story lines that I am NOT interested in and I'm dying to get back to the other characters. Imagine my surprise when every single character kept me engaged. It didn't matter who the chapter followed, I was invested and I wanted to know what was going to happen.

There were many moments where I was worried about one of the characters. I stopped reading for about a day because I was sure 2 of the characters weren't going to make it to the end and I had to prepare myself for the possible reality.

This was such a great read and such a satisfying finale for me. I'm really looking forward to reading the bind up of the short stories that come both before and after this book. I've already read a couple because they were included in the paperback editions of Cinder and Scarlet but the others are completely to me.

Even though I'm not completely done with the series, since I haven't read that bindup or the graphic novels centered around Iko yet, overall this series was really great. It's a solid series and I hope to read it again sometime in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too good to miss

The Lunar Chronicles is a re-imagined set of fairy tales set in the future that intertwines Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White.

The series is wonderful. Marissa Meyer's has all the attributes of a great writer. Good writing style, interesting stories and characters (even when she's borrowing some famous ones). Actually I should point out that these characters in particular are both flawed and perfect in their own ways. Perhaps because you go in with a preconceived notion given you've always known at least one version of their stories.

I think what really helps Meyer's stand out though is her brilliant plots. The plots are never quite what you think they'll be -- somehow they're more clever, more elaborate and intense then you expected. I found that to be especially true of Winter.

Cinder, Scarlet and Cress introduce us to the respective characters and build up to an explosive conclusion to the series. The main books are those 4. Fairest of Them All is a companion book that offers Levana's (evil stepmother to Winter) and Stars Above - a set of short stories that take place after Winter.

The Lunar Chronicles is delightful, tragic, and remarkable.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... now I think I'm ready to review yet another amazing read from Marissa Meyer

I had to take a little bit of time to wrap my head around the feels I have for this book (also I was at work) but now I think I'm ready to review yet another amazing read from Marissa Meyer. This entire series has absolutely blown me away and though I still think 'Cress' was my favourite, this final installment was definitely deserving of it's five star rating (as were it's predecessors). In this book readers finally get to see Lunar and I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting nearly as much detail as I received. Meyer built up the city of Artemisia beautifully in a way that was vaguely reminiscent of The Capitol and it's outlying Districts in 'The Hunger Games'. After hearing so much about a Futuristic Earth, this really did a great job of feeling entirely new to me and yet comfortingly familiar. Meyer's world-building has always been great but this book was the best by far. Winter & Jacin of course we met during 'Cress' but I consider them the new characters in this one because we get to see a lot more of them. One of the things I've loved about 'The Lunar Chronicles' so far is the character diversity and she did not disappoint: Winter's mental health was a huge part of the story and I loved that it in no way affected Jacin's feelings for her. Also, yet more ethnic diversity on the part of Meyer because Winter, a remade Snow White, was a POC! I loved this SO MUCH! The plot was full of twists and turns though man, this book was so much longer than all of the others. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing but it did take me by surprise and I enjoyed the second half a lot more than the first (the build-up was a little slow). Still, Meyer got this final installment totally right: romances to ship until the end of time, characters that will stick with me for a long time to come, world-building that blew me away and of course the ending that I wanted to see for such a spectacular series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing series

I actually can't comprehend the fact that this series is over. And I'm thinking back to when I was reading Cinder, and its kind of amazing how much these books improved, I did like Cinder when I read it but I know that if I decided to re-read it would be a case of just getting through Cinder and kind of getting through Scarlet until I got to the good stuff in Cress and Winter. Though that could be mostly down to the fact that Cress and Thorne are my faves.

Anyway, I feel like this was a good conclusion to the series, even though I am slightly devastated its over. I put off reading this book after finishing the first three from mid-February to early-March, partly because it was just so intimidating. I mean this book was like 840 pages, one chapter was 1% progress on my kindle! I have to say though that I raced through this and it didn't at all feel as long as I was expecting, don't get me wrong, a lot happened, but it was fast-paced and enticing. And, I'm actually happy I had the three month gap as when I was reading all the interactions between the characters it just made me so happy to be experiencing all their relationships again, and everything just felt fresh.

Basically, Winter was totally worth staying holed up in my room for the whole of last night and the entirety of today.

Marissa Meyer is absolutely amazing at creating a retelling of a classic Disney story that fits seamlessly into a more futuristic, sci-fi universe. When I was reading Winter's story I could see all of the original inspiration from the story of Snow White and it felt so different, but at the same time so familiar - in a good way. I also love the characters in these books, they are all so developed and fun to read about, Meyer does a wonderful job of making them all so different but so perfect together as a group, and all of the relationships feel real and sincere.

To sum it up I loved the entirety of The Lunar Chronicles series, and I'll be sure to get to Fairest and Stars above soon, I don't want to let go if any of these characters just yet!

5.0 out of 5 stars The finale....

'The young princess was as beautiful as daylight. She was more beautiful even than the queen herself.'

The finale.....

I fell in love with Winter about 3 seconds after I read her, and it kept growing and growing. Lovely, kind hearted Winter....

'Winter was a well-loved princess who was prettier than a bouquet of roses and crazier than a headless chicken.'

I hated Levana as much as I hated Circe off of Game of Thrones, and I hated her sooooo much.

The whole crew...Cinder, Thorne, Kai, Cress, Scarlet, Iko and Wolf. Wow. I never thought I would love all characters in a book, but I did. I laughed with them, I cried with them and I celebrated with them.

Omg it was intense!
It was perfect!
This series is everything!

5.0 out of 5 stars A favourite book/series I will come back to again and again

Love, love, love! I can't stop smiling, this book made me so damn happy - even though there were times when I was very close to screaming.

While waiting (impatiently I might add) for the book to be delivered it was all I could think about, wondering what would happen and if my ships would sail on or die a terrible death. Then when it was in my hands reality disappeared for those 824 pages (it is one beast of a book). Now, days later and my thoughts keep returning to the world.

Binge-reading the series was so much fun, but the only downside is that I no longer know what to do with myself… I can’t quite believe the series is over and would kill for Stars Above right now because I need that epilogue in my life! Just after I finished the last page and finally managed a breath I wanted to re-read it. There’s no doubt in my mind that this is a favourite book/series I will come back to again and again.

Marissa Meyer is a master at writing and what I loved most is how I could get behind every single relationship, be it platonic or romantic or family or ‘denying their feelings while the others wanted them to JUST KISS ALREADY’ *looks at Thorne and Cress*. My favourite couple remains Cinder & Kai (though I wouldn’t mind him for myself…) but Winter & Jacin surprised me. Originally I wanted to throw Jacin off a spaceship without a parachute and it was only because he was the perfect match for Winter who deserves to be protected from the world that I had to re-evaluate. Of course given the chance I’d still punch him in the face. Be honest, we all would.

That said I’m going to miss him. In fact I’m going to miss the whole gang and it’s bittersweet. I wouldn’t have it any other way though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enticing blend of romance and adventure - an epic conclusion

This was an excellent conclusion to a superbly crafted series. Boy was this book long! It's the second long book I've read in a row (the other was the sublime Oblivion) and it didn't disappoint in the slightest. I loved every minute of it.

One of the things I love the most about this series is Marissa's ability to develop so many different characters and give them all a unique voice. This could have all gone terribly wrong, but it didn't, and each chapter flowed smoothly even with the POV changes. I read a lot of books narrated from one or two characters perspectives and this was a very refreshing change. She also gave me 4, yes, FOUR, different romances to root for. Pure heaven. All the romances were so sweet and I was praying that all our couples got their HEA.

This book was about so much more than romance, though. It was a race against evil to reinstate Cinder as the rightful Lunar heir, and thwart Queen Levana's despicable plans. The plot was full of twists and turns and though I knew it was all going to work out fine in the end, I honestly couldn't have predicted the journey.

The ending was great, even if I did want more! I would love a novella set a few years in the future to show where each of our couples are. Pretty please, Marissa?

This series is such an imaginative take on the classic fairytales we all know and love, and I'm in awe of this author's ability to develop such a fantastic world with amazingly different, complex characters and put her own unique spin on the classic stories.

I also adore her writing. In my opinion, each book in this series is better than the last. If you haven't yet checked out this series - you should! I've bought the collection for my niece for Christmas and I just know she's going to love them as much as I have.

Incredible ending to an incredible series. I'm so sad it's over, but look forward to whatever Marissa produces next.

As an aside - fantastic value for money considering the length.
