4.0 out of 5 stars so- so

I almost question if someone else wrote this book or ghost wrote. It seems drawn out in many way and the ending was torture! I won’t spoil it with commentary but the end seems like a new writer explaining their way to the end. I haven’t read any other Will Robie books and probably won’t.
Baldacci’s series Camel club was my fave and this does not hold up to that caliber.

4.0 out of 5 stars Immersive storytelling

Mr Baldacci has a true talent for fully developed characters and intricate storytelling. This Mississippi based story was quite involved and held my attention throughout. I listened to the audiobook and although I enjoyed the narration, I found the constant mispronunciation of words to be quite irritating. The proper punctuation of towns (Biloxi for example) that will be recurring throughout should be verified be the narrator before work begins.

4.0 out of 5 stars Part 4 of Will Rogue & Company...

I enjoy David Bald u cigs books and had to read the next one on Will Robie, everyone's favorite assassin. The book took a big turn to a storyline it took another 1/4 of the book or so to realize that it wasn't returning back to the main story I thought it would. Still plenty if mystery and intrigue but not as good as the others.

Onto the next book, #5 of the series, and the last of Will Rogue and 3 letter agencies...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Baldacci

The Guilty by David Baldacci is the 4th book in his Will Robie series. I love this series, but then again, I love most of whatever David Baldacci writes.

The Guilty picks up where Will is on assignment as an elite CIA Assassin, where he accidently kills a child. He cannot get past this horrific memory, and he is no longer sure of himself. Will has not seen his father since he left home over 20 years ago, and now he learns his father has been arrested for murder. He is given time off, and decides to go back home to Mississippi and find out what has happened to his father all those years he was gone.

When Will tries to visit his father, he is turned away. He begins his investigation on what his father has been up to; he is surprised to learn that his father remarried, has a son, and was a judge; this from a man who was always angry and would beat him. Without the help of his father, Will finds himself in the middle of something much larger than a simple murder for revenge. The past will rear its ugly head, with many surprises, and twists that will involve many people.

It is when Jessica Reel, Will’s friend and sometimes partner joins him to help decipher the truth that things get even more exciting. I love to watch Will and Jessica work together in solving crimes, and how easily they dispatch their enemies. They are an unbeatable team. However, as they get closer to the truth, the stakes are high, and the danger escalates.

When his father is out on bail, Will learns more about his father, that will open him up to reveal more of himself. The last half of the book was a thriller, which I could not put down. Just when I thought I knew who the murderer was, I was blindsided by all the revelations, and twists as we reached the exciting tense action packed climax. Needless to say, I was very surprised at end.

To tell too much more would be spoilers. The Guilty is a top notch mystery, suspense thriller that holds you on the edge of your seat, not to mention when both of their lives will hang by a thread. Will Robie and Jessica Reel are great team (even if they are the toughest and best assassins). I hope Baldacci keeps them together.

Once again, David Baldacci gives us another fabulous thriller, which we have all come to expect from him, and throughout the book, there was not a dull moment. I suggest you read this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved revisiting these characters

This was another fun installment in this series. I've come to really enjoy the characters, so when I first sat down to read, it almost felt like I was being reunited with old friends.

Will Robie and Jessica Reel are both as skilled as they come, but despite being calculating and lethal, they're both still very human, and that's what I've always loved most.

I'm not sure if I liked this particular book as much as the others (The Hit is probably still my favorite) and that was probably because it strayed away from the typical "government assassin" feel since it wasn't set in/around Washington, DC like the others. That's not necessarily a bad thing; it was fun to see how Robie and Reel adapted to the new environment. This was more of a classic "whodunnit" story than the "stop-the-terrorists" or "thwart-the-assassination-plot" we've seen before in this series. Lately I've taken a lot of pride in being able to successfully predict the outcome of stories like this as I read (I knew who the assassin was in The Innocent the moment the person appeared on the page) but to Baldacci's credit, I had no idea who the actual killer was in this book until it was revealed at the end.

I did have a little bit of trouble keeping track of the backstory and who was who, because there were so many explanations of who died and when and where so-and-so lived and who was in league with who 20 years ago vs. present day. But in the end it didn't really hamper my ability to follow the meat of the plot.

I was sad to see this book end, and I did feel like the end was very satisfying. The ends of the other books have all seemed really abrupt in my opinion, so this was refreshing. It IS still left open enough that we could see more from these characters in the future, and I hope that's the case.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Thriller, With Mystery As Well
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 21, 2017

The Guilty is another tremendous entry in the best-selling thrillermaster’s increasingly impressive resume and the fourth instalment in the David Baldacci's Will Robie and with the added great character Reel.

Robie, a black ops CIA sniper, accidentally shoots a child while assassinating a corrupt foreign leader overseas. When he freezes on his next op, unable to pull the trigger, Robie’s handler pulls him out of the field and gives him an opportunity to get his head right. Meanwhile, Robie’s father has been arrested for murder in the small Gulf Coast town of Cantrell, Mississippi, a place Will left immediately after high school and never looked back.

Now forced to confront his painful past – much of which stems from his strained relationship with his father – Robie's returns to Cantrell in an effort to resolve the wounds of his past and get his professional mojo back. But the Cantrell he returns to is vastly different than the one he’d left. His father, once a second-rate lawyer, is now the county judge and living in a massive mansion with his new wife and child, a shift that drew the elder Robie more than his share of enemies in the town. The man he is accused of killing, a shifty lowlife character named Sherman Clancy, saw his once-dismal financial fortunes skyrocket and then plummet back to earth for mysterious reasons in the years between Will’s departure and Clancy’s murder. A new preacher has also arrived in town, with his three rebellious and savvy daughters seemingly neck-deep in the mystery that entangles Robie’s father.

While most of the characters are well-balanced, the relationship that truly stand out among the most noteworthy is the rapport between Robie and Reel, with the professional and personal trust and respect that the two share for one another – having risked it all for each other several times before – feeling believable and compelling, not to mention being the source of a fair amount of witty banter/humour. The tense dynamic between Robie and his father is palpable as well, and their shifting relationship – and how they both deal with the wounds of the past – To me the highlights being the relationship between Robie and his father very touching moments.

The mystery itself is a massive adventure and journey full of dead ends and surprising turns, with new reveals doled out at regular intervals as the story builds to its shocking conclusion, a spectacular double-twist climax that will leave even the most jaded thriller readers impressed. A thoroughly satisfying thriller but for Baldacci also a strong mystery that I have not quite read from this author, this adds to Robie and how his characters unfolds in this book.

A clear four star for me... A match against his John Puller books, just love both characters.
