5.0 out of 5 stars “The Scorpion investigating the Serpent”

19 year old Jessica O’Grady goes missing after telling her lover, Christopher Edwards that she is pregnant. Christopher’s steady girlfriend is also pregnant, and talk of marriage is in the air. After Omaha PD find reason to pursue Edwards for Jessica’s disappearance, it is decided to call in Douglas County’s crack CSI team, led by Dave Kofoed. Kofoed’s team has a reputation of being the best CSI group in all of Nebraska, finding crucial evidence to help convict some of the worst criminals Nebraska has ever seen. They even found a small amount of blood in the bottom of a dumpster 5 months after the victim had gone missing. Hmm, red flag. The one good thing that you can say about Kofoed is he doesn’t hog the glory, he congratulates his team first. If they only knew who they were really investigating.
It is very easy to see how the years of being a newspaper reporter has paid off for this author. He knows the key players and their stories. Sticking to the facts, his composition of the story reads better than most fiction. His interjection of emotion and opinions do not get in the way of the story, they add color. “The Scorpion investigating the Serpent” is a classic example of his work. Even after years in jail, Edwards has never confessed to the crime, nor has he given up the location of Jessica’s remains. Again, this is not fiction, and it is not a pretty story. This story needed to be told – and John Ferak is the best person to do so.

1.0 out of 5 stars A big bunch of nothing

What was this even about? A brutal murder? A corrupt CSI? Incompetent attorneys? A guy is convicted of murder. The main evidence is the blood filled mattress (still wet when discovered by police) located in the suspect's room. Was suspect questioned about the mattress? Who knows? He wasn't arrested until weeks later. That the suspect is guilty is not disputed. The other villain in this story is the crooked CSI who planted blood and DNA evidence. He was eventually convicted of fraud (or something) in another case , that resulted in the convictions of two innocent people, who were later exonerated. THAT would have been a much better story to write about. In this book though, the author concentrated on how the crook planted evidence in this case, which really didn't have much to do with convicting the suspect, since the other evidence was overwhelming. So again, not sure what the main point of this book was supposed to be. A bad guy was convicted of murder. His attorneys probably should have gone for a plea deal. Oh well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Case

This book had me in tears. I can't believe that the same crime investigator got a hold of another case as well and did the same scheme. I enjoyed the phenomenal details, pictures so that we can have a view of what was going on as well. This family still does not have closure because their daughter is not home anymore. Prayers for the family and friends. Another great book from a fabulous author (John Feral). From the first chapter it grabbed my attention and I wanted to know more and I got more than I expected. I recommend this book to anyone because it was so great.

This is a very well researched and well written book that I had a hard time putting down once I started it. Jessica O'Grady fell for Christopher Edwards who obviously thought of himself as some sort of a ladies man. What happened to her was really sad and I do hope that her family gets closure. I was shocked to learn that one of the CSI people had planted evidence on different cases and that led to a lot of suspicion regarding this case. I was also surprised that the police would not arrest Edwards even with all of the blood evidence on the mattress along with the blood spatter evidence and recording of him buying white paint to cover evidence on the ceiling tiles. This was an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

John Feraks story of the disappearance and murder of 19 yr old Jessica O'Grady in 2006. The book seems well researched and John Ferak has a writing style that makes the book easy to read & hard to put down!!
No body!! No weapon!! Just a bloody mattress & some blood spatter in Jessica's boyfriends bedroom was all they had. That was until a CSI investigator found evidence that others had missed!
The state of Nebraska was able to convict Jessica's boyfriend, Christopher Edwards for her murder, even though her body has still never been found!

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid!

A potentially gripping story ruined by the worst writing 'style' ever. The author swings wildly between attempting tabloid, noir, journalism and sensationalism and the result is torturous. It reads like the the work of a verbose 15 year-old. I really tried to stick with it as the story sounded fascinating but gave up after 30%, it was so painful to follow. If you enjoy reading, sadly give this a wide berth.
