In which we are introduced to a charming woman who shares Inspector Witherspoon’s deep interest in trains, another young guttersnipe is rescued and placed into Luty BellE’s establishment, and justice is meted out.
The books in this series are entertaining, but the basic plot of a detectives house staff being the real investigators, book after book, makes all of the individual plots blur together. These are not books that I go back & re-read.
I will Always give Mrs. Jeffries a 5 star rating! The plots are simple: the Inspector has a murder to solve, his household staff goes to work gathering clues and passing them along through his Constable. Simple, easy and uncomplicated. Except the details are never uncomplicated. They twist and turn and hold the reader's interest. Although every book stands alone, the characters do grow and change and have lives that are lived out as the series progresses. Along the way, the reader even learns some things about the Victorian era's culture. The Mrs. Jeffries series by Emily Brightwell is perfect reading for fun, for a summer afternoon, before bed, and when you want to enjoy a good book.
it's like murder she wrote only 150 years ago, the gaslight age, a bumbling detective and the class war of Britain; it's the lower class common man (woman) against the elite and powerful of the upper class and it's selected upper crust management. Characters you learn to love and and it's a large series.
I have been reading the series, I like following the characters. There is always an interesting story to go along with it. It's fun to see what the group is going to do. Easy reading after a busy day.
I am slowly acquiring the entire series. These are wonderful reads. If you pay careful attention you may be able to figure it out on your own, but it so well written that I get caught up in the plot and happily follow the storyline to the end. Always a satisfactory ending.
I cant remember what number this one is but its memorable because the inspector finally shows some interest in a young woman, though he is so shy. Its really cute and a good mystery.
Mrs Jeffries arranges for her employer, Detective Inspector Gerald Witherspoon to take a neighbour to a ball being held in connection with awards being made by a literary society. Fortunately or unfortunately a member of the society is murdered during the ball and Witherspoon finds himself investigating the crime ably assisted in the background by his domestic staff.
I found this mystery an entertaining read during a stressful few hours and it helped me to relax. I did work out who the murderer was quite early on but it was still interesting to see how it all worked out and the murderer was discovered.
I like the characters in the cosy mystery series and the way the servants work as a team - even Fred the dog playing his part. There is plenty of humour and light hearted dialogue in the book and the mystery is well plotted. The background of Victorian London is well done too. Recommended to any readers who enjoy crime mysteries without too much on the page violence.
encore une série policière Victorienne très réussie! Les personnages de l'entourage sont très fouillés et c'est donc facile d'entrer tout de suite dans l'histoire. J'ai bien aimé cette intrigue
