HBW’s basic philosophy was that we are given a mind to learn and a body to work. To be a whole man, satisfaction in the productive use of both is required of us. This idea is seen in all of his novels but comes out more directly in this one.
His appreciation of horses is also obvious in many of his works, but it is more directly addressed here.
I have read most of HBW’s novels and recommend them to others even though I can never rate them 5 stars. He is a great writer until the conclusions which often verge on hokum. This book is no exception. Our hero rides off alone into the sunset.
