Mystery book four continues the format which includes the entire staff looking for murder clues. Brightwell doesn't get sidetracked with elongated descriptions or unnecessary twists and turns. Her format is the accumulation of clues that form a true picture of the murder and murderer. It keeps your interest and flows easily. I have trouble putting it down because the "table discussions" allows the reader to sort thru the clues with the characters and make connections that lead to solving the mystery. Sometimes I think I know who the murderer is but want to finish reading to substantiate my choice. I enjoy Brightwell's stories because they are clean and easy to digest, yet fun to unravel.
I have read quite a few of the Mrs. Jeffries books written by Emily Brightwell and I have enjoyed them completely. The characters often have a close call with being discovered by one person or another. There is always the added under current of tension caused by Inspector Nigel Nivens and his constant efforts to put our hero in a troublesome position with the Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard. Emily's relentless sleuths are hard working and fiercely loyal to each other and to Inspector Witherspoon. I have enjoyed all the books in this series which I have already read and look forward to continuing the experience. Kudos to Emily Brightwell.
The Mrs. Jeffries mystery series is a delight. Each book in the series can stand alone, each story has twists and turns and enough red herrings to keep pages turning. They are not violent, they are not horror filled, they are not mean spirited. They are turn of the century Victorian civilized entertainment filled with wonderful characters.
It's fun to read several books of a series. The characters are like people you know and that makes the stories more fun. These books are of the cozy variety and enjoyable to read!
So, so - not as good as some of her books. I couldn't figure out why this book was not as good as the others - not much information on the characters or murder. I was sadly disappointed and hope her newest one will be better.
A cross between a cozy mystery and Agatha Christie, plenty of false leads and a plot that keeps you wondering if "the butler did it".
Inspector Witherspoon is on the hunt for the murderer of Jack Randall. As he tries to befuddle his way through the clues Mrs Jeffries needs to keep her wits about her to ensure he doesn't follow the wrong path, especially as Inspector Niven is breathing down his neck.
When Jack's body is pulled out of the Thames at Waterloo Bridge with a bullet hole in the chest it's time to delve into his life. Turns out Jack was up to no good defrauding investors in his silver mine in Colorado which leaves a lot of suspects. Unfortunately the money is missing, one of the investors has a Colt 45 the weapon suspected of firing the fatal shot. But everyone had access to it.. was it one of the investors who all had more than one reason to be desperate for the return of their money? Was it a scorned woman afraid she's being abandoned? Was it one of the servants taking an opportunity to change their lives completely? Follow the twists and turns as Mrs Jeffries and her band of loyal helpers try to help the Inspector follow the right path and solve the mystery.
A businessman is found dead in the Thames with a bullet through his chest. Jake Randall is wanted by a group of people who have invested in a dubious silver mined in the US. They want their money back. Inspector Witherspoon is asked to take on the case which naturally involves his housekeeper, Mrs Jeffries, and his other domestic staff.
This is an entertaining complicated mystery and I completely failed to work out who the murderer was and the motivation for the crime. It is an enjoyable read with plenty of amusing dialogue between the servants and their friends.
If you enjoy cosy crime with a historical background then try this entertaining and light hearted series. There are well drawn characters and a well-researched background and very little on the page violence.
Mrs Jeffries and the rest of the staff work together to collect various snippets of information which allow them to finally point the inspector in the right direction. An interesting case with a side story of the inspector trying to make household savings whilst the staff over do it until he relents. An easy but enjoyable read.
