I do enjoy how the staff, and friends, of Mrs. Jeffries, work together to solve Inspector Witherspoon’s murder investigations. They each bring something to the gathering and Mrs. Jeffries is an excellent manager and they each feel the reward of a job well done and that they each played an important role in accomplishing the solution. It will be interesting to see how long Ms. Brightwell can keep up the interest and allow some growth of her characters, unlike poor Hannah Swenson, who is more experienced but never wiser.
I love this series. YES, like most series, it is somewhat formulaic. That does not detract from it in my view. If I want or need the world's most compelling oeuvre, I look elsewhere. Since I absolutely adore cozy, well-written mysteries with great lines and well-drawn characters, however, I often seek out one of Emily Brightwell's Inspector Witherspoon series. This, like the other 3 I have read, did not disappoint. I'm looking forward to reading them all.
I enjoy the 'Mrs. Jeffries' mysteries very much. I'm currently reading the third book in the series. The characters are interesting, fun and I don't have to worry about offensive language or behavior in these cozy mysteries. I enjoy mystery series and Emily Brightwell is providing a great one. Personally, I picture Angela Lansbury as 'Mrs. Jeffries' and wouldn't that be fun to see!
I have read the first three books in this series and I think that I am done with it. It just didn't hold my interest any longer. They are not badly written. I just want to move on to something else.
The Mrs. Jeffries series of books never disappoint. And "The Ghost and Mrs. Jeffries" was a very good book. If you are starting the series, you should try to do them in order because the characters do change over time. I heartily recommend this series.
Inspector Witherspoon, kind, considerate and charming employer, is in a little too deep, formerly the officer in charge of records he's been moved to cover murder cases. Regretfully he needs a little help.. in steps his housekeeper Mrs Jeffries, widow of a police officer who has an uncanny knack for police work she manages to solve the case and drop sufficient hints to Witherspoon to help him get his man. Witherspoon really doesn't realise how much help he's getting from his house of devoted servants Mrs Goodge the cook who loves to ferret out a bit of gossip, Betsey the maid able to flirt with the footmen and get her own bit of gossip, Smythe the coachman with his hansom cab contacts and Wiggins the not so bright footman with an eye for a pretty maid. With Luty Belle Crookshanks, and her butler Hatchett, a wealthy neighbour who likes nothing more than a bit of adventure to ease her boredom, the team is complete.
It's a little bit like Agatha Christie crossed with a cozy mystery, a convoluted plot that initially seems difficult to solve suddenly becomes the obvious. Just how is Mrs Jeffries going to impart the vital information without Witherspoon realising.
Abigail Hodges is murdered in her own home and Inspector Witherspoon is charged with investigating the case. This means that Mrs Jeffries and the inspector's other domestic staff have a new investigation to work on to save them from boredom. The subsequent mystery involves them with some very dodgy mediums and they rope in their friend the eccentric Luty Belle Crookshank to help them.
This is an interesting Victorian mystery with no swearing or on the page violence and plenty of interesting and likeable characters. It is an entertaining light read for those who like their mysteries to present them with a puzzle to be solved.
This series can be read in any order though if you read them in the order in which they were published you can track the developing relationships between the characters.
I have just finished this book on special offer (more or less in one sitting) and am extremely pleased to see there is a whole series of them. Very nicely written comedy mystery and a lovely idea to have a whole group of Downstairs sleuths helping the ineffectual Inspector. The characterisation of the various servants could have been stronger, but since this wasn't the first book in the series then maybe Ms Brightwell already dealt with that in previous books - I will now go to the first in the series and find out! Good fun and a good read at the offer price.
The book continues with the gentle but inept inspector who is assisted by his various servants to solve heinous crimes in Victorian England. The story was fun but believable and the mystery was not solved until the end. Well worth a read
Good story nice easy read...if you want hard bitten detective stories then this is not for you.. Miss Marple with a dose of Murder she wrote.. nice way to pass lockdown
