Leslie Charteris always produces action as well as well thought scenarios. The Saint is well crafted and always adventurous.
I first read this book in 1967. It contains my favorite Saint story: The Golden Journey, which was one of the books that led me into a life that includes hiking. I have reread it many times and still have my original copy. As you can imagine that 50 year old paperback is a bit worn, so I decide to get this as an ebook which will never wear out.
This is easily the best of the post-war collections of short stories, of which there are seven: they are set in Paris, Amsterdam, The Rhine, The Tyrol, Lucerne, Juan-les-Pins and Rome.
Of these stories, my favourite is the fourth, "The Golden Journey". But "The Spanish Cow" is sheer entertainment, even though the Saint comes perilously close to becoming a gigolo. And "The Rhine Maiden" at least is a return to the old, pre-war Saint.
P.S. For a list of all Charteris's Saint books, look up "Simon Templar" (section "The Saint book series") on Wikipedia.
