$3 for another chapter in this so called "book" and nothing there. Sure the continuing relationship of the two main characters is interesting, but that's really all this "book" has, and it reads in maybe an hour. $1 might make this interesting reading, but really even on this one a stretch. Again, this overpriced "pay for a chapter" is looney. As a kindle Unlimited it might make sense, but here is an author throwing tidbits for some serious dime, for what is, at best, kk stuff in book two. Sorry dude, no more. I say object with your feet to this overpriced storytelling.
Let's be clear, these are incredibly short stories, not novels or novellas. The entire series should have been at most 3 books, or each book should have been fleshed out more. That said, the books are entertaining. The only other pick I have is that sometimes, the motivations and inner dialogue don't really match up to the action. It can be confusing as to what the character is actually feeling. The characters are interesting, but again, sometimes flip from what you would expect based on previous inner dialogue. Overall, a fairly entertaining way to spend 2 hours. If 2.99 for a short story seems reasonable, then go for it!
I have really enjoyed both stories I have read in this series. I agree that the story is short (124 pages, NOT 88 pages as stated in another review), but the writing is very good, effectively showing the interplay between the characters. About halfway through I thought this was going to be a mélange of 3 or 4 Star Trek episodes but the author went off on a different path that explored the idea of personal duty. As I've said in other reviews, I don't mind paying for good writing. I've wasted my money paying for too many longer books with good reviews that were too much fluff filler to finish. I'll keep paying for and keep reading this series.
This book is the second of series but to the author's credit it works well as a standalone. Mr.Ward has an easygoing style with graceful handling of multiple viewpoints. His quirky hero plays down his wiseass reparte in this book and the adversarial relationship between he and the big blonde Dragoon becomes less hostile and at times almost close. I imagine an episode where they are trapped somewhere together and finally rip off each other's clothes off and have plasma hot sex, destroying the cabin they're in. Along with compelling descriptions of her huge, muscular body...which body he already stares at constantly plus the intimate juxtaposition two such differing personalities it seems almost inevitable and a jolly good read, as well. I have enjoyed the series so far and recommend the books to anyone looking for fun featuring a MacGyver type hero who has been pressed into service by not very vicious pirates.
Quick short stories in a good series. The author has pirates of great depth and complex character. Of course biological life support, plant and animals are the most effective way to recycle (actually complete the cycle) of life we will need at least part of our biosphere with us as we travel space, other writers, and movies have not explored this.
This would be 4 or 5 stars but i don't like the fact that it would take 4 of his "books" to make one real novel and the book as written would cost about 12.00 if you combined the books prices. I really liked the writing and the characters in the book, i just don't like an 85 page book that i am paying full price for. if he ever combines these i will be back to read a real book from him/her otherwise ill find another author
This is another story from this author, which is deeper than it first appears. The interactions between the main characters is complicated. Each trying to wrangle the situation to get what they need, to make their lives tolerable. Though at the end of the book, we see a surprising change in the way they look at life.
In the old days we would have called it a page turner. With new twists and turns on each page. Hard to set down and calling to you all the time to read a little more. Very enjoyable to read and further understand the cast and crew with the science officer.
The bad news is now that I have finished, I have to wait for my next fix of the science officer. Hope another book comes along soon.
Where is the addiction notice that this series could become habit forming?!?
