5.0 out of 5 stars Stirring Second in the Fire Series!

Set in 1106, 13 years after LADY OF FIRE, this is the story of Guy, Count of Rivaux and Catherine, Demoiselle of the Condes, daughter of Roger de Brione and Eleanor (from book 1).

The story begins as William the Conqueror's surviving sons are at war. Henry is King of England and his older brother Robert Cuthose reigns in Normandy. Guy, Count of Rivaux has been sent to Condes to take Lady Catherine as hostage for Curthose to ensure her father's neutrality. Catherine has been promised to Robert of Caen, King Henry's favorite son but she's not enthusiastic about him. She would have another of the king's bastards, Brian FitzHenry. However, when Cuthose needs men and money, he bargains with Guy for men and money using Catherine's hand as the incentive. Guy marries her but as she is only 13, he does not take her, wanting to allow her time to grow. And then comes the war...

Like LADY OF STEEL, this tale is rich in the history of the time as England and Normandy battle for control. Caught in the middle are Guy and Catherine and their tenuous emerging love. The villain from LADY OF FIRE, Robert, Count of Belesme, is back and just as compelling a figure as before. If you loved book 1, you must read this one for a dramatic finish.

It has great dialog and exciting twists and turns--a fast-moving story that will keep you turning pages. Another great medieval in the Fire series from Mills.

FIRE AND STEEL

I love a great historical romance - unfortunately, this was not that great. The historical accuracy was acceptable, the visual details there for the most part, but the storyline was much too predictable. The main Heroine unlikable (smug, arrogant, very immature, 13yrs old was not young for wedding/bedding back then, but they were usually also acted much older, since most people never saw the other side of 30) It required very little thought or attention (from me) to any of it to follow and much of it dragged for pages. The author had a very annoying habit of constantly using "God's blood...(but you take liberties with my person!) and, "God's bones...(do you think me a fool?). I thought if I read either one of those ('God's blood/bones) again, I was going to hurtle my Kindle out the tower window and hoped it hit the Demoiselles bitchy little head! Affordable and not bad for those times you just want some nice 'fluffy' reading to relax to...

When I started reading this story it was so boring but I saw all of the 5 star reviews and knew there had to be something to it. At the 36 percent mark I started enjoying the story and it became very good. I loved Guy, the H, he was to fall in love with, wow. Christina, the h, all she could think about was another man. This story was very good but it took along time to get there. I recommend this story.

This book was easy reading, with fascinating characters from the beginning. The storyline was really quite interesting as well, and from the beginning, I wasn't sure where it was headed. Lots of little twists and turns to make it interesting, along with a few likeable characters and one really evil character! The story spans over a period of 10 years, however it moves quickly. A good read with a happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite of the Fire Series

I can't say enough good things about the Anita Mills medieval Fire series. They are incredibly written with believable characters making personal and political choices within the context of the 11th and 12th century. If you are a romance fan, you must read this series. I don't understand why it hasn't been reissued to be more available to new fans.

This first book perfectly sets up the conflicts and relationships which will enfold in its sequel Fire and Steel. Fire and Steel is my favorite of the series because I find the hero Guy to be very compelling. The book follows the rise and fall and rise again of his political and personal fortunes, which are closely intertwined with his marriage to the heroine. All the main characters from the prior book are present in this novel.

ROBERT BELESME IS THE MOST MEMORABLE BAD GUY IN ALL THE ROMANCE NOVELS I HAVE READ (WHICH IS QUITE A FEW!). He's not your usual two-dimensional obsessive brute set up as the foil for the hero. Yes, he is violent (very true to the medieval genre), but he is a thinking, feeling man and this second novel tells the story of his revenge on the characters of the first novel. In order to get the full picture of Belesme, you really should read Lady of Fire, the first novel.

I keep re-reading these books, the way I re-read the Julia Quinn Bridgerton novels and the Patricia Veryan Golden Chronicles. I put these books in that category of superb romance and adventure.

I had read Lady of Fire, the first book in this series, and did not think the second could be as good as that one. But it was. The characters are amazing. I really liked that the story was realistic, it was not like a fairy tale love story. It was filled with action, adventure, and romance as s well. Continue the great work Anita Mills, you are without a doubt my favorite author of medeival romance.

I'm so happy that these books have been released in electronic form.

This series of books has been with me since the 1980s. No matter how many times I move, I always take these books. I love the characters and historical accuracy. I really regret that Mills never wrote a book focusing on Robert.

Personally, I would have given this book a lesser rating because I did not find either the hero nor heroine likable. It seems they deserved each other. My mother likes this author and enjoys her stories. This this rating is what she gave this book a 3 star rating.
