4.0 out of 5 stars Well-written

I read this book several years ago and I was happy to read it again. Heffernan was a journalist and his writing style reflects that. Good paragraph structure, concise sentences and varying levels of complexity. The only quibble is that 3-4 centered asterisks should be inserted when he changes scenes. Sometimes the reader is jerked into a change of scene.

Action, surprises,terror,laughter,tears and death
What else could you possibly want from a great story.
You could add war and peace and of course drugs, don’t forget drugs and the way it was moved.
It’s a great story and you will believe your part of it. But remember it’s a story

While much of this novel will remind readers of "The Godfather", there are some interesting differences. Notably, the use of Napoleon Bonaparte's real Italian name. Few people know that Napoleon was of noble Italian heritage and he could not initially speak French.

I loved thus book. Like The Godfather, it brings you into the characters lives. The history behind the novel is fascinating with the weaving of two wars, several cultures and intrigue. I highly recommend this book.

Kind of like the Godfather but set in an interesting milieu (a word used a lot in the book). Enjoyable, well researched. Allows the reader to make their own moral judgement. Slightly sprawling and a bit of a wandering ending but overall pretty good.
