5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of sympathy for Brooke!

I really felt for her after reading this. Her mom had a really big problem and it completely affected Brooke in ways I'm sure she's still dealing with and in ways her mom could never possibly even acknowledge. The letter Brooke wrote to her mom as a child pleading with her to stop drinking, and the story of how young Brooke found out there was no Santa Claus is just heart wrenching.

This is a great, truthful and a sorrow-filled memoir of a mother / daughter relationship. It also really covers Brooke's career, which is fascinating to read. I hope Brooke can put to bed the issues her mom put upon her because she couldn't stop drinking. I just felt so bad for her. I'm sure many girls growing up in Brooke's era would have loved to trade places with her, but after reading this I'm not so sure.

Highly recommended memoir but be warned, it deals with some heavy issues and is not hollywood fluff by any means. I have so much respect for Brooke after reading this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Look into Brooke Shields' Life.

With my own difficult mother I was interested in reading this book. I could relate to much of what Brooke endured having had a mother with alcoholic tendencies myself. The book is not a literary masterpiece but it provides an entertaining look into Brooke's world. This will be particularly interesting for anyone raised in the 70s and 80s when Brooke Shields was an icon for teen girls and boys. I am sorry she had such a challenging relationship with her Mom, but I appreciate her honesty and understanding of it all in the end. She loved her Mom but like most families and relationships - it was complicated. A big thank you to Brooke Shields for sharing her story. It will help other women who are struggling to be good mothers to their daughters. It will help daughters with difficult mothers to understand they are not alone. Thanks for sharing, Brooke.

Ups and downs and all around, a mother and daughters journey is often one that is sometimes hard to navigate, but turns out to be one that impacts you forever. I love reading books about Mom’s and daughter’s especially since the loss of my own Mom. It’s been four years now since my Mom passed, and it doesn’t get any easier. I miss her every single day. My Mom and I had a wonderful and very special relationship, our most trivial times of course were when I was a teen mostly because of my attitude problem. Brooke and her Mom’s story was always at odds it seems, but you couldn’t deny the love her Mom had for Brooke. Brooke wanted her freedom so to say, and her Mom loved spending time with her. I think mostly Brooke wanted time away from her mother’s booze addiction and it was clear that her being an alcoholic was the true nuisance in their relationship which is so sad, because they’re relationship could have been so much better. My take away from the book is that just because your daughter likes to have her space or isn’t as needy or clingy so to say as maybe you would have it, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t love you, it just means that spending all day every day with you isn’t on her top things to do list, but her love for you isn’t any less. For Mom’s that are really maternal from the start, they are just very drawn to their children out of a deep love, and they don’t mean any harm by showing it. For some kids though it can be too much, so It is all about trying to have the right balance, still loving your children well while letting them grow into who God is aspiring for them to be. Love this book. It really was beautifully written. ❤️

Brooke remains grounded despite a very emotional life, she's a good daughter who feels for her mom, tried desperately to help her and never got the results she had wished for. How she describes in detail what she experienced when she lost her definitely was so sad and you feel her loneliness of not having a mom or dad in this world any longer and you can relate whether you have gone through it or realize what is inevitably to be. Being the same age I grew up admiring Brooke and think every girl from that era really liked her. You can't help feel her mom wasn't acting in her daughter's best interest as Brooke states she would never let her daughters appear in a film such as she was at 11 years old but at the same time she realizes she would have never rose to stardom if she hadn't and her life would have taken a different path. Parents shape the lives of their children and astonishingly Brooke managed to make a normal life for herself and seems happy today. You realize the guilt she carries for breaking away to become an individual and that's a heavy burden which she's carried her whole life and I feel she continues to. She is sweet and very real.

I found this book really fascinating from the relationship Brooke had with her alcoholic mother to the controversial film roles, her upbringing, her strength in dealing with her fame at such a young age, motherhood and the relationship she had with her own children! A really good, honest account. I have so much admiration for Brooke Shields.

I admired Brooke's honesty in writing about her relationship with her complex mother. I grew up watching her movies so found a lot of information very interesting and relevant. Although I did enjoy this book, I found the writing at times a little 2 dimensional but as a holiday read, it was well worth it.

Well written autobiography which gives a clear insight in to the mother daughter relationship and the struggles that were faced from childhood to adult life living with an alcoholic parent. I really enjoyed reading about her life and had it read within 3 days on hols!!! The only negative comment is that there is a lot of repetition in relation to Brooke's opinions on different situations. Otherwise I would definitely recommend this book.
