Different and intriguing. I really enjoyed this read, it was different than anything I've read in a long time and that's what I've been looking for: different. Two angels helping souls go to heaven become angels who help humans find love. I laughed with them, got teary-eyed for both Liam and Adela when they met their death. My heart broke for Jeff, their human that they help. Jeff has a darkness growing in him from hate and betrayal from having a broken heart. They help him but Liam does something to jeopardize their growing friendship and it's all downhill for the Angels. Like I said "different and intriguing".
I am not sure that this story is one that I would enjoy reading again. Liam's personality is very much off, even for an Angel of Death. Adele is a little better as an Angel of Death, but even though she has a kinder side than Liam, she has her issues. I imagine that as each book is introduced their personalities improve but......
I liked this story because it had very little violence and the main theme is Love. The story begins by describing the life and death of Liam, a forest fire fighter in Australia. With his death, we discover an alternate world populated by Angels who help the Creator carry out His plan for humanity. People have “Free Will” but because of that people are becoming more selfish and hateful. The Creator decides to assign more Angels as Angels of Affection who will work to help more people fall in love. Liam and Adela are assigned as a Team and they become human again to carry out their task among people. These Human Angels still have a connection to the world of Angels but they also have all of the weaknesses of humans. They must deal with temptations, anger, lust, affection, kindness, romantic feelings, etc. Liam and Adela must find the person who needs their help. They try to push and tug in a way that will cause the right people to meet at the right moment and fall in love. Liam and Adela accomplish their task by helping Jeff find love again after several failed attempts and a sudden twist of the plot. Liam and Adela have their own character flaws which cause tension but there is also some attraction between them. This book sets the stage for some interesting sequels.
3.75 stars: BETRAYED is the first instalment in Carly Fall’s new paranormal, contemporary, adult ANGELS OF AFFECTION series. As the premier storyline the reader is introduced to the different ‘tiers’ or levels of angel including our leading couple Liam and Adela.
BETRAYED is not a story of romance but a story about two angels who must atone for the sins of the past. We learn some of the backstory about Liam and Adela-their life as humans and how they died. There is the possibility of love in the future for our couple, but as Angels of Affection their job is to find love for others. And we discover the truth behind the demise of Jeff’s marriage to the woman he cannot and will not forget. Jeff is Liam and Adela’s first assignment as Angels of Affection and it doesn’t take long before one of them has destroyed any hope of a successful job.
The reader is pulled into a revealing story where Christianity, thanatology (death and dying) and life-ever-after merge into a series where humans are sentenced into the afterlife based on their history of sins; where two angels are pulled into the conflict of love and hate; and where the same two angels reluctantly find themselves playing Cupid in a world where finding hatred is sometimes easier than finding love.
Carly Fall has written an interesting and engaging storyline where two Angels of Death are reassigned as Angels of Affection and in this, the series will take a different direction. The writing is simple; there is no graphic sex; some foul language; the world building introduces the angel demographics and assignments. There is some sexual tension between Liam and Adela that I hope will be addressed in a future storyline-but not too far into the future because I want a HEA for this couple.
My only complaint is that the storyline line ended rather abruptly. The build up of the premise pulled the reader into a world of possibilities but felt rushed to the finish. In this I was left wanting something more.
I received this book free for an honest review. I'm a huge fan of Carly's "Six Savior's" series so when I found out she was starting something new I was excited to check it out. I have to say that once again Carly doesn't disappoint. The concept that Carly put together with the Angels of Affection is fantastic. I loved the characters of Liam and Adela. They play off of each other well. Liam is a sexy, sarcastic, and at times obnoxious guy (let's not forget womanizing) who loves trying to get under Adela's skin. She comes across as cool, aloof, and very tough but buried far underneath she is soft and caring. As the book progressed and their back story began to come out I could feel their personal pain. The changes that take place within their characters and their dynamic with one another is great. And then there is Jeff, the guy they are supposed to help after getting dumped by his wife. Anybody would be upset in that situation but his pain and anger were palpable while reading the book. I just wanted to be able to reach out and help him. Anxiously awaiting book 2 to see where Liam and Adela go from here.
