I read these one after the other because Secrets and Lies was a bit of a cliffhanger. These books are easy to read and I was able to read each in one night. I read the first book in this series a while ago and one story builds upon the other. Cassie Scott has gone all through her life feeling like she has let down her magical family because she has not one bit of magical power. In these two novels she finds that her magical powers were in fact stolen by Victor Blackwood, and given to his son Evan. Cassie comes into her own during these stories and finds she is very good at brewing potions with a little bit of help from her family. Her love affair with Evan turns sour when in Secrets and Lies, he finds out that he is the reason that Cassie has been drained of power but is too afraid to face her and takes off leaving an opening for Matthew Blair who wants Cassie because she would produce strong magical children as well as some oddball ideas about romance and courtship. Evan comes back and the fight is on. Both men want to protect Cassie but in the end Cassie finds that it is best to find her own power which she proves by brewing a potion that protects her and another witch from being burned at the stake by rabid fundamentalists. When Evan refuses to return her powers, Cassies father tells the man who is trying to unify and form a governing body for people of magic, that he will consider backing him if he can return Cassie’s powers.
That seems like that will happen but at the end Cassie feels some remorse and tells Evan to get away while he still can. Overall I enjoyed these books. 4stars Book 4 Stolen Dreams comes out in July 2014
