The 4th book in this series ( now up to 7?) wraps the story arc of the first three. Tying up the plot and laying the groundwork for an ongoing universe vie for attention in this meh offering. The writing continues the author's entertaining style. The existential universe and main character's angst threatens the 'balance' (apologies to anyone reading this) needed to root for the hero.
Start at Book 1 and give it a chance. That first book is the weakest but the concepts are great. The writing improves dramatically after then- not that it was bad, just moderately decent. I expect great for a five star rating, and book 4 delivers. Good versus evil, angels and demons, ghosts and spirits. The series has them all and with a flawed protagonist that you cannot help but admire. The series has gradually become more about life, than just a fabulous adventure. A mark of a truly great series.
This book, the fourth in its series, does tie up a number of the loose threads that have accumulated in the previous books. In that respect I liked it. You will find yourself jumping back and forth between characters from chapter to chapter, and at times I was unsure who the character narrating was and where there were. But in the end l felt this book was good and worth the time and money to read. Cheers!
I stumbled on M.R. Forbes' divine series quite by accident. I am an avid reader, primarily of historical and dystopian fiction. This is the first review I have ever left on Amazon, but after devouring this novel, I felt compelled to post my thoughts. This series has kept me riveted from the first page of 'Balance' to the final epilogue of 'Bound'. The characters were so well developed, the action kept moving at a breakneck pace, and the story line had so many unexpected twists and turns that I had to keep my head on a swivel to keep track of it all. It is a great series for any fan of this genre, as good if not better than all of the series being turned into movies lately (This series would incidentally translate amazingly well to the big screen). I am thoroughly impressed with M.R. Forbes and his style and prose. I am delighted that he was able to independently publish his work to give the world an opportunity to enjoy his creation. The writing is easy to follow and makes for a quick, thoroughly enjoyable read. Bravo, M.R. Forbes. You have a fan in me and I will be anxiously awaiting your next endeavor.
I enjoyed the previous books, but found and am still finding this one tough to get through. The story is fractured and keeps moving from different point of views. It seems some find this enjoyable. I am not liking it at all. I only push through out of a habit to finish whatever book I start. But 3 weeks in and I am only 33% done. Even with a great ending, it will not compensate
When I discovered that the 4th book was on the shelves, I giggled like a school girl. I was ready to find out how it all "ends." Wow...was I unfortunately disappointed. It felt like I was watching a bad episode of the Twilight Zone because some things MADE NO SENSE!!! I enjoyed all the books that came before this one ... but this story did not flow well. In truth, I didn't truly understand what was happening and, more importantly, didn't get "the why" about 40 percent of the time. There are some "surprises" in this book, but they simply fall flat because I felt like part of the story was told behind the scenes (double cross...triple cross...quadruple cross...etc) and we just get the end result.
I gave this book 3 stars because Forbes is a good writer even though he lost me a little in this story. This last book felt like it was missing something. Perhaps it was because we had to read the Landon/Charis story in a void while the other characters did their own thing.
This series is so imaginative and well written. I got hooked and read all four of these books in a week...and still managed to keep going to work, albeit half asleep because I just wanted to get through one more chapter. Well worth your time and Forbes is an excellent storyteller. Can't wait for the next one!
A satisfying conclusion to the beast cycle that continues the series not stop action pace. I loved the two different narrator's for this bookbinding really did miss her. It Will leave you wonder what Wil the next cycle be about. Mr. Forbes is a great author and I can't wait for the next book in his other series his cure for magic.
