If you have an opportunity to see the BBC production, please do. The acting is wonderful and it was shot on site for some of the scenes. A terrifically sad time in history and is still not recognized in Third World countries as being a form of slavery.
I was interested in this book mainly because I found the Channel 4 TV series so fascinating and bought the DVDs in order to watch it again and again. However, having read a lot more about the Gregs, the lives of cotton mill apprentices and Quarry Bank Mill I was left a bit disappointed about so many "facts" that seemed to be overly dramatized. Some of the details were accurate in so far as they happened but the dates left me wondering whether the sequence was as stated? When I researched information for a historical fiction story I ensured they were accurately recorded but allowed my imagination to fill in all the blanks and said so in the foreword.
