My Review:
Overall.... 4.25
Performance... 4.25
Story.... 4.00

Okay, for as long as I've been reading m/m, this book has been on my to read list just because everyone raves about it. When i saw the audio was available, I knew that it was time. And now I get it...just why everyone loves this book. It's a fascinating story about the unlikely romance between two heroes who shouldn't have ever been in a place to fall in love...but then they did. Seriously, LOVE unlikely romances when the author can make it work.

And this definitely is an unlikely love story since D is the hitman sent to kill Jack, a surgeon who was unlucky enough to be at the wrong place at the wrong time...which means he's now the key witness against a huge mob boss and everyone is gunning for him. The problem is...D doesn't kill people who don't deserve it. An innocent surgeon falls under that umbrella and D decides to take Jack under his wing and protect him. Just because D doesn't kill him, doesn't mean that other hitmen won't take the job. But there's so much more brewing to this story line...both on D and Jack's side...and as they run for their lives...they both find a new reason why they really need to live.

It's a great story and it's very in depth. This is a long book. I'd be listening and look at the audio thinking that the story was winding down only to find that there was still over 4 hours left. I love that. This is a story that will definitely leave you satisfied.

There's so much to love about this story. I love the grey area of what D does...he truly is a bad guy, but has a great moral code and finding out exactly why/how he got to this place was heartbreaking. I like that the author took that fact and used it. Jack truly does have an issue with D's history. While he understands, he isn't sure that he can accept that reality longterm, even if D leaves the business. That was a great reality in this fictional world. Jack is so super-intelligent...the best scene in the book when he's on the stand proving what a prick the defense attorney is...I was laughing out loud. And this isn't one of those books where the bad guys are caught and everything is tied up in a tidy little bow. The author truly does add those touches of reality to it all that make it fabulous...and easier to believe the happily ever after when it does come. I adored the way she ended the book. It was just really good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A few hiccups with the seller, but the book is gorgeous and the story is spectacular.

This book definitely has scenes that are not for anyone under the age of 17 or 18. However, the dominant subject matter was not the sex and that's what I find most refreshing about 'Zero at the Bone' by Jane Seville. She's able to describe these two characters with the efficiency that I found endearing and heart-wrenching. Honestly, I fell in love with both these men, because they were both men.

The book itself is gorgeous. There are no marks, no bends, and I couldn't be happier with the presentation.

Contacting this seller was my only issue. I've bought from the Book Depository before and have always had trouble communicating with them. It's like they aren't speaking the same language. I insert the order number like they ask, and they respond with an email that asks for the order number. I was so upset that I wrote a very rude email back, because it's happened a few times before. I just wish they could answer a question without needing the same information repeated three to four times.

Besides all that, I am very happy with my purchase, but, unfortunately, I probably won't buy from this seller again. The book is beautiful, the story is great, but I cannot deal with how hard it is to communicate with the seller.

This was one fine book. I loved the action, the suspense and the way Ms Seville chose to tell the story, but I absolutely adored the main characters - Jack and D. The juxtaposition of Jack's unreserved honesty and D's guarded reserve appealed greatly to me. I really liked the side characters and the mystery of X, D's friend, and their remote yet at the same time close relationship. Told from multiple POVs, the story depicts immeasurable pain, boundless courage and undying love between two men who despite their differences found common ground and dared to reach for the impossible.

Jack Francisco's life was ordinary - respected colleague, good-looking man and possibly a good friend. But all of that was snatched away when he unwittingly became the only witness to a murder. And after choosing to stand up and testify, his life was no longer his own. So, when he looked into a barrel of a hired gun, he thought it was over. Not quite yet! Call it Fate or not, but in the next moment he found himself on the run with the man who was supposed to kill him. Who knew that that which didn't kill him, would become the love of his life. I loved Jack's patience, his faith in D and his unfailing belief that D is deserving of love, happiness and bright future despite his past. His care of D till the very end made me admire him even more. And his testimony on the stand was the s*exiest thing ever!!!!

D is stone cold assassin. He fears that one day he will simply cease to exist, since it's hard to feel anything at all. But despite all those that he killed, he lives by a certain code of his own - never kill an innocent. So when he is blackmailed into eliminating the witness who couldn't be any cleaner, he simply can not do it. Thus starts their trip to outrun the killers, assassins, traitors and bullets. D lost faith in human kindness, closed himself off completely, and yet here he was - a man willing to be there for him without expecting anything in return. The shift between them was so subtle, and D's shell started to crack.

Both men open up to each other either due to forced proximity or simply because it's time. Jack is there to help D purge the poison that is slowly eroding him from inside, he is there to help D find himself again and give him something worth fighting for. From awkward moments to the most intense intimacy known to me, both D and Jack choose each other and fight for their future no matter how long or short it might be. Some moments were truly heart-warming, some almost made me cry. D has changed so much. After all he has been through, his capacity to love and cherish really amazed me. And while Jack hasn't suffered any great downfalls in his life, his courage and devotion to D and his willingness to sacrifice himself was truly admirable.

The story was truly suspenseful even during quiet moments - it was in the air just hovering over them. From one emotional high to another, this book kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved Jack's time alone when he tried to determine what it was he felt for D. I loved D's dedication to making sure they both have a future they want. And I loved when D became Anson again. The epilogue was absolutely marvelous. I can't find enough words to express how much I love these men, the journey they've had and the happy future they have yet to live! Highly recommend it! Amazing book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING...and possibly the best m/m romance tale I've read to date.

I read this many moons ago but never actually got around to reviewing it. For me, this is gotta be one of the most perfect romance novels I've read (and re-read, many times over). Not only are the two MCs gorgeous, well-rounded although complex men individually, but put them together and they're a complete conundrum that absolutely should not work as they are polar opposites….and yet they couldn't be more perfect for one another. So much so that I fail to see how anyone other than the sweet, strong, forgiving and just downright beautiful soul that is Dr. Jack Francisco, could've kick-started D’s frozen heart back to life. This is true romance, with a s**t-ton of ST between the protagonists that eventually leads to some not only very hot sex scenes, but also healing and life-affirming for both men…..D in particular of course. There's not only a truly gripping and frenetically-paced plot at play here with intriguing peripheral characters and some equally convincing and loathsome baddies, but there’s also the harrowing backstory to D’s life and how he became the brooding and broken man we see today, that will undoubtedly break your heart in two – seriously, I've never prayed for a book character to find love and fulfilment as much as I have for him. This entire tale is adrenaline-packed with absolutely no filler, ultimately leaving the reader feeling wholly satisfied (and in my own case, with a ridiculous ear-to-ear grin) with one of the most romantic yet (for these guys anyway) entirely believable HEAs ever. If you love m/m romance with richly drawn, albeit somewhat flawed characters and a genuinely thrilling plot that hasn't been swamped with page after page of unnecessary sex scenes, then damn, this is an absolute MUST READ!

I'd also like to add that if you haven't already done so, I wholeheartedly recommend listening to the audio version of this. Admittedly, I'm still a little dubious where audiobooks are concerned, but Alan Smith is hands down the best narrator I've listened to. He not only brings a wonderful sense of pace and drama to the tale, but also gives every character such richness and clear distinction, bringing them IMO, one hundred per cent to life. And his interpretation of D just blew me away….as this is basically, exactly how I imagined him to speak, not only in accent, but inflection, mood, downright sexiness…..just everything. Superb and highly, highly recommended.

I have had this book for over a year and something kept stopping me from starting it. A hit man and a witness in protection, where could this go.
Well this book is a page turner with the two main protagonists, Jack the protected witness and D the man sent to kill him taking you into their heads immediately.
This is book has a burgeoning relationship you are rooting for sitting with a rollercoaster of a crime and thriller story that even when there is down time you are on edge waiting for the next twist and turns. There are some well rounded secondary characters both good and bad who are vital to the plot.
This is not a simple opposites attract but a tale of two men's journey back to themselves.

The book is fantastic a definite 5 but if you like audio books get that as well as it is 6.

I love it when authors do a ' mix up ' and veer away from the expected. Jane Seville takes an anti hero assassin like D and pairs him with ' Mr normal ' Jack who is in the wrong place at the wrong time and weaves one of the best gay fiction stories around them that I think I will ever read. This book has everything - a proper gutsy, gritty crime backstory that never loses pace or excitement ( edge of the seat stuff ) and one of the best m/ m romances in the genre that starts slowly and ends up packing a real emotional punch. The list of adjectives to describe this story are endless as it has lots of different layers to it. Exciting, sexy, tender, poignant, witty, funny, sensual, surprising.......... and perfectly balanced love scenes ,in amount and description. Bliss!

The love that grows between the MC's makes this book the success it is and for me is the true heart of the novel. It was a privilege to be on the outskirts watching it unfold and it will NEVER leave my Kindle library. I first read this a couple of years ago and constantly watch out to see if Jane Seville has produced anything else, but as yet no joy, so for now I'll just have to keep coming back to Jack and D for my fix - No hardship!

You just must read this book, it is fantastic. D is an assassin who has some serious issues. He's totally ice cold, and makes no attachments whatsoever, but lives by a strong set of rules, to only ever take on a hit if the person is a total lowlife. When he's asked to kill Jack a surgeon who witnessed a brutal murder of a woman, and is waiting to give evidence that will put the killers away, he becomes the target of an assassin. D was asked to do the job,but refuses, and then is blackmailed into doing it as the person who gets him his jobs is captured and held. He's waiting in Jacks apartment for him to come in, and when he does, D finds he just can't shoot him as he's a really genuine good guy. D decides to spare Jacks life and goes on the run with him, determined to protect him from the people who want him dead. Extremely slowly they form a sort of friendship and a delicate trust in each other. I'm not going to say anymore, as it may spoil this story, except to say do yourself a favour and read this book.

Other reviewers have said it all far better than I can, but I had to add my endorsement - what a terrific book!

I was hooked from page 1, but don't be put off by how dark the first few pages are - it's an introduction to the very damaged man known only as 'D'. After that we meet Jack: an ordinary person who witnesses a murder and does the right, and brave, thing by agreeing to testify against the killers. That's how he first meets D, a professional hit-man, who has been blackmailed into assassinating him, but, for various reasons, doesn't. This is the start of D's transformation, redemption, journey back to humanity - whatever is best to call it, he's changed profoundly by his association with and, eventually, his love for, the not-so-ordinary Jack.

I did like that things weren't passively 'accepted' - Jack has a hard time dealing with the facts of D's profession, and doesn't avoid the issue: he wants to understand, even though he doesn't agree with what D has done. He wonders if his feelings for D are genuine, or simply due to their forced circumstances. They argue and bicker, but Jack is intelligent and mature - the way he deals with D's inability to even admit, never mind communicate, his feelings is impressive.

That's not to say it's not also an exciting thriller - car chases, fights, double crosses: there's a great plot in there as well. This was well paced, romantic, thrilling, completely engaging. I enjoyed it so much.

I've devoured the short stories on the website, and am really looking forward to the next book. This is a story about love and hope. I've lost count of how many times I've read it and, every time, it makes me feel better.
