After reading the series over a period of a few months I had a little break before this book. I found this book very enjoyable and back on the track of the first ones that I enjoyed so much. The mention of the hip thing so frequently still irks me ( and helped lower the star rating ), but this time it is forgiven given how the book ends. I also enjoyed that Judith manages several times to stand up for herself and actually gets rewarded with appreciation from unexpected quarters. The other thing I can say that bugged me was the added dimension of how truly wasted the years that Judith and Joe lost was never addressed and seemed not to change the dynamics of Joe to Herself, and given human nature I do NOT find that believable.
I loved this book. The characters were well developed. Mary Daheim did it again. I had no clue whodunnit. But as an added twist we don’t know the identity of the victim til the end too. A very enjoyable read.
I love Daheim's B&B series and have them all. In Vi Agra Falls, she brings back the energy of some of her earlier B&B books. Characters are lively and true. Anyone who has been to Seattle will recognize some of the thinly disguised names for well-known places such as Norway General for Swedish Hospital, Shell Shoal Marina for Shilshole Marina, and Heraldsgate Hill for Queen Anne Hill. Some conversations are hilarious such as the one with the head of the B&B association as Judith tries to explain her current situation. Loved it and couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next one!
This book was slow reading. I kept wanting to skip to the end to see who the killer was so I could put the book away. I did read it but I was bored the whole time and figured out the plot twist almost from the beginning, Don't want to give it away and spoil the read for anyone else but it was just so obvious to me when Herself came home married and wealthy. I also did not like how the author had Joe acting with his ex. If I had been Judith I would have borrowed the spoon from her neighbor or the shovel from Renie and used it on Joe.
I love mysteries and this one met my expectations. Kept me curious as to who the culprit was. Figured it out before the end. To read a mystery, figure out the who was the killer is a challenge I enjoy. Mary Daheim is a colorful writer. Enjoy her work. Vi Agra Falls is only one of many of her books. Good reading.
