5.0 out of 5 starsGladys Aylward by Janet and Geoff Benge

This is an amazing adventure story! I think it would be a bit too scary for younger children, but for teenagers and up, it will encourage everyone to remain faithful to Jesus under even the most difficult circumstances. The Benges do a wonderful job in describing the joys and challenges of a life completely surrendered to Jesus.

This little book is worth reading. Yes, it is written on a level for young people, but I am sure adults will be blessed by the wonderful story of Gladys Alyward. This book follows along the lines of the movie The Inn of the Sixth Happiness in a way. You can really see the difference between the true story and the story as presented in the movie. What Ms. Alyward had to endure is much more deeply and emotionally presented in this book. One can truly appreciate what a missionary sacrifices in order to serve the Lord. Ms. Alyward's journey to China alone would stop most people. That she endured is a credit to her love for Christ, submission to the His will and dependence on His power. I do recommend this book for young folks and adults as well. I intend to order more titles by these authors.
I had seen the 1950's movie "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" and was curious to know how much of it was accurate so I got this book. What an amazing life Gladys had! The hardship she endured to do what she felt called to do which included getting over 100 Chinese orphans out of China when the Japanese invaded. It's an easy read and very inspiring. The only liberty the movie took was the love interest which didn't exist. I recommend this book to anyone.
very exiting, interesting, inspiring and good the life of a young woman who obeyed God's call to serve him in a foreign country. Gladyss faith continues inspiring thousands of christians all over the world to love and obey God Thanks authors, this is a very inspiring book

This woman is amazing!! I love this book, how much detail the authors got into that was not overwhelming but incredible! When I started to read another book on Gladys by another author, she left out the beginning of how Gladys made it to China! So much was lost. But this book is great and hard to put down.

Well written book that looks at a young woman's efforts to serve in the mission field in China. The cultural information, along with historical context, is very fascinating and helps tie this spiritually uplifting book into the bigger picture of what has happened in our world. She is a brave, tenacious woman who, when faced with surmounting trials, trusts in the Lord to help her through and teach her something. Enjoyed reading this with hubby and 8 yo.

Wow! What a book of hope and obedience to Christ! This book is full of suspense, action, excitement and hope. There are some beheadings mentioned- so you may want to make sure your children are mature enough to handle that. But it also would be a great opportunity to share with them the HOPE found in eternal life! This book is easy to read, will get your emotions stirred and love for God increased. "Go you therefore and preach to all the nations".

How do some people just seem to know their calling? Gladys did and didn't let anyone or anything get in her way of fulfilling Gods plan for her life. What a wonderful story of courage and faith. Her life was anything but calm. This book was better than ANYTHING you will find on the best seller list today. This is truly one NOT to miss.

This series of biographies is wonderful for the whole family. We enjoy them as adults and our son loves them too. Great for read out loud too. They deal with the facts but in a family friendly way that we are grateful and confident as we introduce these great people in our home.
