How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love the age of sail you will enjoy this book

If you love the age of sail you will enjoy this book. Being a journal, there are days that are boring, but even the uneventful accounts of blue water sailing or life on the beaches of California in 1835 bring a sense of the time and place. And after all, isn't that why we read historical books? I used to think that Patrick O'Brian hit a high mark in describing sailing ship rigging and seamanship but Dana may have taken it higher 150 years earlier! His description of the food, clothing and incredibly long hours of the sailor in this era paints an unforgettable picture. If Dana had been your friend, he would have always been the one climbing higher, sky diving, riding his mountain bike downhill the fastest. Perhaps he lived before his time? Rest in peace....
P.S. The Audible version is a great way to absorb this book while exercising!
