I liked the book, though would not say it was extremely exciting. You basically have two people who have no hope for this marriage to work. Corbett is marrying Lilliane because he is assigned to get the area under control and find traitors to Edward, who soone will be King. He and Lilliane were supposed to married years ago, but someone killed Corbett's father and made it look like Lilliane's father did it. There was a war between the two families and Lilliane's cousin who was like a brother died. Lilliane hates Corbett for it. However the contract was never broken and since it will help Corbett, he decides to force her father to honor it. Lilliane's father does not want the castle to go to her sisters or their spouses, and has always thought Corbett and honorable person. Therefore he accepts Corbett. The story is mostly about Corbett and Lilliane finding their way, which is hard with Corbett keeping secrets from Lilliane, since he is not sure if he can trust her.
I disagree with some of the reviews. Yes there is mistrust, but Lilliane and Corbett both like each other and they try to make the marriage work. Unfortunately things happen that sometimes cloud the issues, making it hard for them to trust each other. They are not hateful and hostile though most of the book. Lilliane is not spoiled, though she fights having to marry Corbett at first. Corbett is not only interested in Lilliane's looks, nor is he nasty. He does not trust her, and is jealous. He is also trying to figure out if Lilliane is one of the traitors. This makes it hard for him to believe in her, like he wants to, since he has fallen in love with her, but hasn't admitted it even to himself. As far as Lilliane listening to advise from someone, she used to love this person, and she was only with her husband one night before he had to leave on King's business, and had not come to know him. So when it looked like something bad had happened, yes she listened to someone she shouldn't have and blamed her husband and his man.
This is my first book of hers I have read, but I liked it and will read more. It is one of those fast reads that mostly keep you interested, but may not be as in-depth as some people like. I do wish she had wrote from his side of the story. Mostly the whole book is from her view. Once or twice she may have had something from his view, but it was only a page or two, and not something that showed really what he felt.
