My 2 year old daughter and I both love this book! Even though the story is longer than many other board books, it holds her interest all the way through. I really try to be thoughtful about the messages I expose her to, and I think this one is net positive. It's the first time I've introduced her to the idea of someone wanting to control another person, or such a villainous character as Sam Sly is, but I think it deals gently with the subject for innocent souls. The words are lyrical and fun to read. I'm actually glad there is no glitter on the inside of the board book, as my daughter picked at the glitter on the cover and took off a bit of paint (photo attached).
Like most of Julia Donaldson's works, this one is a lyrical charmer. A devious circus owner tricks a singing mermaid away from the sea, and only with her friend's help can she make it back home. Lovely illustrations complement a simple, and charming story. I would rate this one below Tabby McTat and Room on the Broom, but it's still a great read for a little reader.
My daughter (3.5) has wanted me to read and re-read this book ever since we received it! It has a nice rhyming composition to it, which makes it easy for Mommy to read. The images are colorful and textured and have glitter on every page. I am in love with Julia Dondalson and her stories, as is my daughter. She is very creative and am looking forward to hunting down more of her books!!
This is a great book. The pages are so colorful and the glitter makes them even prettier. I haven't had any problems with glitter coming off the pages. I like the story, as well. Not too long, not too short. I think it teaches the importance of making good choices.
We already own The Princess & the Wizard & Sharing a Shell, both like this book are written by Julia Donaldson & illustrated by Lydia Monks. The pictures are beautiful & bold coloured collage with glitter accents that doesn't come off the page. The stories are typical Julia Donaldson with clever rhyme & theme. A great read that even my 8 year old son enjoys when his little sister chooses this book.
My 2.5 yr old daughter LOVES mermaids and loves this book. The pages are colorful and shows what’s happening in the story. My his and I love that it’s long(ish) and lyrical. A definite must have for your growing library.
