There are two stories in this compilation, and both were well-written.
Caleb, sheriff to a small Dakota Territory town, finds a pregnant woman and her son barely conscious on his property during a blizzard. He delivers her baby and tries to help her in any way he can. Johanna is trying to escape her past, and is afraid to trust the kind sheriff. She is in constant fear that her abusive husband will find her. Although the storyline is sad, it was heartening that the townspeople contributed to her starting a new life. That was very inspirational to me.
Mary and Will have been friends since childhood. Before he leaves to fight in the Great War, he asks Mary to marry him. Unfortunately, Will becomes missing in action and presumed dead. This revelation tests Mary's faith in God. Her love for Will is also put to the test when another man proposes marriage. I really enjoyed reading this book!
