I have read all of Delaney's Last Apprentice books and can say with out a doubt that it is one of the best young adult stories published in the past 10 years. As with any series, some books are better than others. I really liked book 4, Attack of the Fiend, where we learn that Alice is the daughter of the Fiend (a devil like god) and Boney Lizzy, a powerful witch. I thought that the series wandered off story for a bit in books 6 and 7 (Clash of the Demons and Rise of the Huntress). They were excellent books, but did not move the main plot along as fast as I would have liked. Beginning with book 8 (Rage of the Fallen), Delaney has picked up the pace and we are now rushing to a dramatic conclusion in book 13. In I am Alice, we find Alice entering the dark in search of the Fiend's domain and the final Hero Sword, Destiny Blade, which will be used in a ritual to kill the Fiend once and for all. Alice knows that she will be part of the ritual and that Tom Ward, her one true live, must sacrifice her in order to kill the Fiend. If the ritual fails, Tom will die at the hand of the Fiend and the world will be plunged into a long period of chaos ruled by the Fiend. Alice knows the ending of the ritual, but is willing to be the sacrifice to save Tom. As she enters the dark, Alice meets many enemies and one friend from previous books. More than any other volume, I am Alice requires that you have read the previous books and remember some of their details, as Alice often refers to past events as she moves through the dark. I really liked how Delaney reintroduces many of these past characters as a way to fill in some of Alice's back story. We see her early days being trained as a witch by Boney Lizzy and how she was tested to see just how strong a witch she will become. The story is sort of a Whose Who of past villains. We also see just how much a Hell like place the dark really is. There is a lot of action in the book and as usual some parts which will scare the pants off of younger readers. For anyone who has not read this series, I highly recommend it. I can hardly wait for the final volume of this story arc. There is a hint in I am Alice of a possible future series featuring Slither and his Kobalos brothers. I will buy any book about the Last Apprentice world and hope the Delaney continues to entertain and scare us with many future volumes.

I am still in the middle of reading this one but I am so enthralled in the series. It is such a well written, thought out, imaginative story. This series has me on the edge of my seat from page one of each book all the way to the end of each book.
This isn't one of his best books. The story line itself is okay. It gives you some needed background on Alice but it leaves you with questions. Like why didn't Alice use her powers in earlier books?
Anyway, it really didn't further the story much except for the last chapter. Still it wasn't too bad. I'd recommend it to get a better idea of how much Alice loved Tom.

Along with the images there was stanps and handwriting on the first page. Not what i expected. Apart from that, the rest of the book was intact. Still disappointed at the writing though.

Love the story, but to many times alice walked into the same traps. The bad guys seem to know exactly what will happen and where. Even when she changes the plan and does something different. Just seemed to easy as if bad guys can see and tell the future before it happens.
This was one of my favorite books in the series. The plot continued to move forward, and we learned more about Alice--a truly fascinating character. This is an awesome series, very clever and well written, but it's SUPER GORY. I keep laughing at myself, wondering why I like this incredibly creepy, gory, bloody, disgusting series. I usually hate horror. But the elegant, old world writing style, unique storyline, and interesting, empathetic characters draw me in. You have no idea what's coming next. Can't wait for more!
I have really enjoyed the Last Apprentice series and enjoyed "I am Alice" it is not the strong story that the previous books had been, but enjoyable all the same. My favorite part was the return of Thorne. I think she could easily be a spinoff story. It was nice to get the background of Alice and how she became the tortured soul of good and bad. I would recommend this book to any fan of the last apprentice.
