This book came along at exactly the right time even though I didn't know I needed it! Valerie Khoo has laid out clearly and logically the steps required to make your project happen. I came across the book having done a couple of online courses through Valerie's site, The AWC (Australian Writers Centre). It links the dots perfectly between some seemingly disparate ideas I had for my project. In fact, the book opened my eyes in respect of some of my existing businesses too - bonus!
I have long been convinced that our story is not only what underpins our identity but establishes our potential and therefore our future. It is part of my own coaching model, but a part I sometimes have to run "under cover" so to speak because it seems "soft".
Thanks to Valerie Khoo I now not only have the perfect tool to convince my clients (executives and business owners)of the importance and power of the STORY, but a guide to make it easy.
Selling ourselves is a tough job. When asked "What's your story?" we often feel like the emperor (or empress) with no clothes. But Khoo is a great teacher. Every chapter is filled with examples (good and bad) illustrating everything from a good elevator pitch and investor pitch to a readable "About" page on your website and powerful testimonials (aka customer stories). As an added bonus she provides readers with down-loadable templates for guidance.
Keep this one on the desk, like you keep your little black dress always at hand, and you'll never be caught threadbare again.
I'm a writer, and have been for over 20 years, but I still got heaps from this book. The way Valerie breaks down the different types of stories businesses can use to profile their brand is relevant and easy to understand. Storytelling is not an easy thing to do, but in today's hyper-connected content-rich world, it's important for all businesses to be able to tell powerful stories in order to cut through and get noticed. That being the case, Power Stories should have a place on your desk, next to your computer!
As a business owner you need to be able to influence, inspire and persuade, if this is an area that you struggle with, then you need this book. Valerie shows you exactly how you to identify the stories that will help you to get what you want, plus she outlines really simple techniques that can turn anyone into an amazing storyteller. Highly recommended.
