5.0 out of 5 stars Can Anything Else Go Wrong?

We all know the feeling of wanting to look our best when there's a special event about to happen. Well, ten-year-old Becky is no different. The problem is that just before her very special birthday party everything that can happen to make her look less than her best, does--from her eyebrows, to her party dress, to her hair. Then, of course, there's that snippy girl who always looks perfect and loves to flaunt it in front of Becky. Her birthday party is about to be Becky's worst nightmare. Still there's justice in Becky's world, and the reader will feel very satisfied to see how things turn out for this very sweet girl.

The Curse of the Double Digits is a fun read for the young and the young at heart.

The story begins with Becky expecting magic in forty hours and fifteen minutes. That is when her birthday party starts. She will turn 10 on the tenth day of the tenth month. Then her friend, in fixing her bangs, shaves off all but the ends of Becky's eyebrows. Mishap follows mishap, resulting in a hilarious tale. It contains a cast of fun characters: Darlenie-the-Meanie, Chad the fifth grade dreamboat, and a hairdresser from hell, among others. The author's presentation of children and their world rings remarkably true. The story is a delight, especially with the twist at the end.

I gave this book to my nieces for Christmas and am so glad I did! In the week since, they've read it countless times, giggling throughout. Kelley has a gift for creating entertaining, engaging stories for youth that resonate equally with parents. The characters are precious, the artwork spot on and Kelley's voice, wonderfully unique. In a word, "The Curse of Double Digits" is delightful. (Thanks for making me a popular aunt! :))

Cute little story about a girl who turns 10 and everything falls apart. From clumsiness to friends trying to help and failing to well-meaning relatives choosing the absolute wrong hairdresser. Great life lesson in the end.

I read this book to see if I thought my niece would enjoy it. I'm sure she will! The book is cleverly written, funny and has a great lesson for all. Ms. Kelley has a fresh voice and I'll be checking out some of her other books for my niece as well.
