The killer awoke before dawn... no wait that is something else. It's James we are interested in here. James, the killer. The one person who has come to terms with the virus and what he is to the point that he, and not the virus is in control. After a decade of being ruled by the virus, James has decided to take charge of his life and do something so unexpected, so unreasonable given the circumstances that even he is surprised. He and only he, will become the protector of the innocent. At least, for now.
Baya is leaving the underground city. Once a safe place surrounded by friends and protectors, the city is now under siege and she has made the decision to leave and strike out on her own. Eventually she will have to leave and now seems the right time to do it for herself.
Hampton has been out of the safety of the underground for several years. Avoiding those with the virus he has managed to eke out a meager life for himself. Lonely, looking for companionship he stays close to the underground city in the hopes someone will join him.
As each of the three search for a safe haven, they will be drawn together for the ultimate challenge-survival. There are no camera's here, no challenges for reward, no councils or votes. In this world survival is being on the edge of death and destruction.
A short story packed with fully developed characters, conflict, emotional angst wrapped up in a plot that keeps the pages turning. Well written and highly recommended.
