5.0 out of 5 stars Changed my Life

I was born mute, but my loved ones always said there are no obstacles to one's success except the barriers we have in our minds, so I got this book and through sheer will of force overcame my muteness and now hold a phD in Public Speaking, have spoken to over 1 million people, and I'm told my oration skills can even raise or lower the price of avocados worldwide.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good strategy is nothing if it's poorly delivered.

Life changing! As a member of senior management I am always looking for ways to improve my leadership style. I believe I am taking a holistic approach by venturing out beyond just the typical leadership literature. I have read several books including Peter Drucker, Robert Green, Malcolm Gladwell, Dale Carnegie, John Maxwel, Kerry Patterson and others new and classical. Although the works of all these great authors continue to refine my perspective, two books had the greatest impact on my life. Dale Carnegies "How to win friends and influence people" and Dr. Carol Flemings "It's the way you say it".

Not everything in this book was for me, I don't stutter, I already have good posture and I'm not shy, but what I thought didn't apply to me made me aware that it is an issue for other people and helped me develop a sense of compassion and understanding that makes me more aware in my interactions.

In my quest for the latest in advanced leadership strategy and communication Dr. Flemings book shifted my focus to the fundamentals. With all the research and technology available it's easy to get away from attention to detail in basic human interaction. I have always believed that strong fundamentals are the basis for mastery in any skill. I highly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book

This is a good book, however, you could benefit much more by joining a group like I did called Toastmasters GirlTalk on Facebook to practice speaking in front of others. You are timed and noted of any pauses or "umms" or "okays". This book is good because I did address a lot of things like speaking too fast, going off subject and "umms."
However, I was able to address it in my speaking by doing it publicly several times till I got it right and that makes a big difference as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked this book

I like the stories that she gives to convey meaning. I also like the suggestions she gives and the exercises she encourages us to do to improve our speech. I like how she recommends that we mark up our speech so that the right tone and pitch are delivered. I am now more mindful of not only the words I say, but how I say them.

Some parts of the book I felt were a little dry because I did not think it applied to me, because of the type of speaker I identify myself with. However, even after reading those sections, I still got something out of them. I like her saying you can't fix what you can’t hear.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to improve their communication skills. There are also very good topics on nonverbal communication and how to communicate effectively in social situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book that helps me step ahead and chat

I am so lucky to come across this book. I used to be a person that stayed along in any kind of events; I didn’t know how to start conversation, and didn’t know what to expect from a smalltalk, which I didn’t even know was called “smalltalk.”

This book is full of concrete case studies on communication. I learned how to get the ball rolling on start, how to proceed with a bridge and get meaningful conversation going.

This has changed my lifestyle too. I find I become outgoing. I am willing to talk to anyone whom I think he/she is willing to have a quick smalltalk at anywhere, and yes, of course, just like any smalltalk, with a reasonable expectation of the depth of topics.

Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped me figure out how to carry myself

This book was perfect because it goes into voice intonations, rhythm, pitch and everything!

There are a lot of great self help books out there on how to talk to people. But for me personally- a lot of times those books kind of come off as a politeness guide, or a how-to-be-likable guide full of ice breaker lists.... great info! but not what I struggle with. I can learn all the cool phrases to say to people but it's kinda pointless to me if I have awkward delivery.

This book is awesome as long as you have the correct expectations. It's mostly geared towards -how- to say things, not -what- to say. Take the title of this book literally.

As English as my second language. Carol explains the different situations that could be affecting you as a person in a simple way. Using real life experiences cases that makes the problem whatever it could be not an impossible one to resolve. She is clear from the beginning that it takes work. She doesn’t try to sell you something that is magical, but if you work hard Carol is providing you the tools to attain your goals.

I really enjoyed this book, as not only did it provide excellent advice for improving one's communication, but also covered more abstract topics such as public speaking and conversation starters. The author provided much of her own anecdotal evidence for improving communication, and it aided me in comprehending the different issues at hand. It was also written in a clear and concise way that made it a breeze to get through for a self-help book. I definitely recommend it for those wishing to improve their communication skills.

This book offers a lot in a little space. The book can be read in about a couple of hours but you will feel as though you've read a book maybe five times its size. It gets straight to the point and provides you with numerous solutions to tackle the problems which many of us face. It also goes into detail quite a lot and suggests innovative ways to improve the way we speak. It drills down the point that practice makes perfect and gives alot of strategies and tips specifically targeted towards certain speech issues.such as stummering, pitch and pace.

This is an easy book to read, but you do have to practise and follow the advice here. If you do you will have amazing result. Although I only recently purchased this book I have already noticed a big difference in the way I talk.
Until I read this book I had never been able to say specific, and yet since reading this is seems so easy. I'm not sure how that happened! But I am so pleased.
This book is full of good advice and answers most of the problems people will have with their voice
