3.0 out of 5 stars Not to usual high standards

I have two absolute favorite authors, robert jordon and l e modesitt. Unfortunately, jordon has passed on, and almost as unfortunate, modesitt has weakened in his abilities to spin a good yarn. For me, his stories deteriorated starting with book 6 of this series and in the later Recluse volumes. Mr. M has our hero, q, lecturing many times using a crutch "first... Second..... Third...., fourth..." rather
Vaeloria's arrogance noticed in prior volumes, continues in this one. She seems to get irritated at poor Quaeryt at the slightest thing. Unfortunately, after reading the passage again, I am rarely able to understand why she is angry. I guess this arrogance is the way a spoiled sister of the king is supposed to act, especially now that she is pregnant. Or, i am just like Quaeryt. We both only know she is angry.
than working a conversation with the same content. Annoying.
Overall a good book and a great series. I just get annoyed at little things

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the usual Modesitt Jr. Novel

I have read every book on the market by Mr. Modesitt Jr. Most have been entertaining and thought provoking with enough action to keep me interested and reading way too late into the night. Unfortunately this book kept me reading into the night but only because I kept saying it has to get better. Writing this review almost hurts because I love Modesitt's writing that much but there are some points that must be made. First, almost every time he talks with his wife there is some hint at a sexual pass being made but 99% of the time I couldn't find it in the dialogue. Vague is not even close to how the dialogue goes over. In other books the leading character could read people but the story allowed the reader to glean how the main character was making these earth shattering characterizations of the other characters. Not so in Antiagon Fire. There is so much vagueness in the dialogue and the main characters assumption of things happening that it almost seems that he has become omniscience and omnipresent. And the one place Mr. Modesitt has always blown me away has been in his description of dinner and the food eaten in his stories. Even this was lost in Antiagon Fire. So to sum up, sure, you should read it and appreciate the deftness that Mr. Modesitt understands human nature but prepare yourself to be scratching your head often and thinking to yourself, "what was that?". This is definitely one of his better novels but I have hopes for the future. Every writer puts out a dud now and then.

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed the book but it could have had a bit more.

This book takes off where the last one left. Quaeryt has mostly recovered from the injuries sustained in defeating Kharst in a climatic battle/ending to the last novel. In this book Quaeryt is assigned to bring KHEL into the empire, one way or the other. In the previous books, Quaeryt has learned a bit about his Pharsi heritiage (and that of his wife) but only tantalizing glimpses of what it means, not just to be Pharsi, but one with power (imaging power).

Much of the book is similar to his other campaigns. Quaeryt gets broad/vague direction from the Emperor to accomplish the task with unspoken leeway to accomplish the task.. successfully... In this book, we don't have as much political shenanigans as we have in the past books within Quaeryt's chain of command. Thy are still there and obliquely referred to but besides some early interaction, that's it.

Quaeryt is still pondering the ethics of what he is trying to accomplish and his loyalty to the empire. You'll see that in some of the decisions he makes (or attempts to make and implement) and what actually happens.

A good book. Could have been a bit longer and gone a bit further in the overall plot than where it stopped. We will see how the next book plays out.

I have enjoyed this whole series and the Imager universe very much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dependable Modesitt! (Not his best, but thoroughly enjoyable)

It is hard for a long-standing Modesitt-fan to draft an average review, but so I shall: Of all the Imager series, Antiagon Fire is a bit too-predictable, has less character development, and lacks some of the endearing quirks of L.E. Modesitt's writing style, such as detailing the civil engineering or area cuisine. Clearly, this book attempts to lay the foundation for the previous Imager books by telling the story of how "modern" imagers were brought together, but those quirks are what make LEM's novels. I suppose I was expecting events to intertwine more, somewhat along the Recluce series, where "past" meets "future" novels in historical references and misinterpretation of events (where the well-informed reader enjoys 'easter eggs' from related novels). Alas, this was not to be. Several "teaser" clues go dead by the end of the novel, and potential teasers do not pan out, making it more difficult to imagine this fantasy world. Those are the features that - in my opinion - make LEM an amazing storyteller.

Okay - enough disparaging comments! L.E. Modesitt - at his worst - is head and shoulders above most mainstream authors! While I admit this one isn't one of his best, it is better than you'll find elsewhere. You will thoroughly enjoy it. He dependably closes the "Imager prequel", yet leaves room for at least one more novel (where I hope) he will make some more tangible linkages.

Modesitt's problem is that he's set his own bar so high. And yes, I'll there, ready to purchase his next great story (on Kindle) as soon as it becomes available.

4.0 out of 5 stars good read

As a fan of Modesitt (I've read just about everything he's written) I can say this is a jolly good read. It's not him at his best but Modesitt always writes cogently, clearly and engages the reader well. His characters are similar to those in his other books. It's a good plot and full of action. I also like the way the worlds he creates link with one another and the way he plays with his hero and similar themes in each novel.

I don't know how he does it but Mr Modesitt yet again produces a book that I just couldn't put down. The Imager Portfolio and The Saga of Recluse are well thought out, imaginative, and unputdownable reads, all of them!!!
This gentleman has somehow escaped the glory and acclamation of other authors who have produced more 'fashionable' books.
Mr Modessit is up there with the best, Katherine Kerr, Robin Hobb, Brent Weeks, Terry Goodkind, in fact he stands atop of the pile!!

2.0 out of 5 stars What can I say

If I said that I enjoyed this book I would be lying, at least half of it could be deleted and the story would lose nothing. Next to nothing happens for the majority of the book and just makes you want to skim through it. I will read the last in the series but expect to be disappointed again.

Modesitt does again in this amazing Prequel to the Imager series- all the past references in the original series are now coming to life in the life and loves of a Founder of Solidar as he and his wife in their separate ways build a land that will protect the future of Imagers and the land around them and its place in the world
