Another thrilling romantic suspense in book 7 in this outstanding hit series, by no other than York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper. Combining love with suspense, this classic in miss Hooper's "Hagan" series, should not be over looked!........After discovering vital information by asking too many questions from the wrong kind of people, Shannon Brown found herself seeking the help from a handsome stranger. Upon meeting her, Derek Ross could never resist helping a lady in distress, but most of all, he was in awe by her outrageous beauty not to mention the sudden attraction he felt towards her. Escaping with her life, Derek vowed to protect her from deadly assassins, and agrees to help her flee from her pursuers. Realizing his desire for her, Shannon not only had a history of matters of the heart, but she was having difficulty in believing his feelings for her causing all her demons, fears, and insecurities to resurface. But when she finds herself in the arms of this gorgeous outlaw, Shannon is not only mystified, but she is overwhelmed by the after effects he has bestowed on her. Traveling down a dangerous path, Derek finds himself accepting the aid by some very old friends while someone close to home has deadly intentions by making sure Shannon doesn't see the light of day. Content by just his voice not to mention his warm support, Shannon knew with a certainty if she allowed her inner fears to consume her, she would never experience any kind of happiness in the near future, but most importantly, she could lose the one man who claimed to love her simply by not trusting him........thank you..
FINAL DECISION: This story is unrealistic and simplistic but has larger than life characters and a sense of fun and lightness that are enjoyable. The hero is simply adorable.
THE STORY: In the middle of the night a knock comes on the door of Derek Ross, troubleshooter and sometimes government agent. Derek opens the door to find a beautiful woman dressed in an evening gown. Shannon Brown has come to find Derek after fleeing for her life. Someone is trying to kill her and she comes to Derek for protection. In trying to find out who is after the sweet, innocent Shannon, Derek finds that he cannot resist the woman who doesn't believe in her own beauty.
OPINION: I loved this book primarily because Derek is such a sweetheart. Here is an man who is rich, smart, a secret agent and also incredibly considerate the the damsel in distress. This book was originally published as a category romance in the 1980s so it has limitations on content and length, but despite that I love this story. The story is not realistic contemporary -- the entire plot is somewhat incredible, but it has a fun larger than life quality. Everything happens in this book in a matter of days. That being said, I really enjoyed the connection between Derek and Shannon. Shannon is emotionally damaged but her exposure to Derek and his patient and insistent love changes the way she sees herself. The action part of the story is interesting as well. I love these old stories although the tone and innocence of the stories are somewhat dated.
WORTH MENTIONING: Josh and Raven make significant appearances here.
CONNECTED BOOKS: OUTLAW DEREK is book 6 in the Hagen series. This book can be read as a standalone although all of these books are better as part of the series.
