4.0 out of 5 stars Romance and mystery enhance the Dungeons and Dragons experience. The conclusion of an quintet of epic Waterdhavian tales.

Elaine Cunningham expands her talents with Dream Spheres. In one way a conclusion to a 5 part series set in the magical city of Waterdeep, in another sense this book is a gateway into more adventures to come for her well rounded and sympathetic cast of characters. In general these books end too quickly. Anticlimactic would be the only criticism, which is more a criticism of the corporate franchise format than the intentions and skills of the author. Probably the books are not allowed to be too many pages by the publisher. The writer really needed 20-30 pages more in each of these books to do justice to the complex plots and epic conflicts she arranges for the reader.
Especially poignant and emotionally moving was the love conversation between Arilyn Moonblade and Danilo Thann. No other forgotten realms author can match Elaine Cunningham’s female characters and ability to create compelling romantic narrative.

I'm not sure the same author wrote these last 2 books of this series. they are short books also. This one has the same original characters and a few from other books tossed in. It has the sword play, and the mystery but it lacks depth. It goes on about settings, but misses explaining why and what. In the last book I never understood why the wizards big secret never came out, why the bad guys never were brougth to justise. This book also doens't explain the mother connection very well, or the illegal trade. It just misses the mark. not sure I will continue reading this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Character growth

I have so far read all but the last in the Song & Swords series. I am greatly enjoying the character development with Arilyn and Danilo. Elaine has a wonderful way of expressing the uniqueness that is the Forgotten Realms, though I would recommend reading the short stories in The Best of the Realms III that pertain to Arilyn and Danilo before reading this novel or soon after. It helped explain what happened between the previous novel "Silver Shadows". I do wish the final novel would have made it out, but that is another topic.

Elaine Cunningham is amazing as always in this story which really fleshes out the characters even further, especially Elaith. The book was a bit long and meandered at times, but overall was a fantastic story.

This was everything I hoped it would be. Lots of classic sword and sorcery, and a mystery. All the old gang are in and as cool as ever. I really liked this one.

This book is one more to my collection of Forgotten Realm books.
I can't find them new in the bookshops, so find them either online, or in secondhand bookshops.

Great stories.

Thank you

Lebendige Charaktere, eine spannende und fesselnde Geschichte - das Buch hat alles, was man sich als Leser wünscht, außer vielleicht noch 1000 Seiten zu wenig!
