5.0 out of 5 stars Erotica the way it SHOULD be written!

I read this series almost 3 decades ago. I enjoyed the first two books immensely. The third I didn’t really like as much. But I felt, from the beginning, that this is the standard to which erotica should be held. The storyline and scene building, along with the fleshing out of characters (pun not intended but glad it worked!) is as important as the sex and erotic situations one expects from this genre. And Anne Rice delivers.

Anyone can write a dirty book. That’s easy. But to write a book filled with situational erotica that performs as erotica should, yet is entertaining and a little complex, well that’s what separates erotica from filthy books that use the same storylines with lots of dirty words-usually misspelled-or even thinner books leading up to one encounter which is straight sex with no glimpse into the complexity behind the act. Which can be just as stimulating as the act itself.

Think about it… It might be pleasurable to read about a character being disciplined but it’s downright stimulating to be allowed into the other character’s thoughts and pleasure at disciplining the other. Then we have bystanders and we are allowed into their thoughts at viewing the scene before them. This is how Rice builds her erotica and what makes her so good at it.

I tried to read Fifty Shades of Grey. I got through the first 100 pages before putting the book down in disgust. It was simply terrible. I was so sick of the girl biting her lip for 100 pages and absolutely nothing happening that I never picked it up again. I had friends who were so into this book! I simply couldn’t believe it. The writing was just awful. One of them read an erotic scene to me. I just shook my head. It doesn’t remotely hold a candle to the Sleeping Beauty series

I have read and reread this series for 30 years. If that doesn’t declare a five star review then I don’t know what would. If you want to know what true erotica is then read this series. I can guarantee that, regardless of your sex or orientation, it will get your heart pounding and wake you up biologically. I don’t think I can get more specific than that here. LOL Kudos to Anne Rice! She is truly a gift to this genre!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Makes 50 Shades look like a childs book

I purchased this after reading the intro written by Ann Rice and thought it would be similar to 50 Shades, which I enjoyed. This was not reading enjoyment. A far cry from "soft porn", this was violent, graphic rape and abuse.
I deleted this from my Kindle by chapter 4, as I was hoping it would obtain more of a story line...it does not.
Very disappointed since Ms. Rice is one of my favorite authors. I will be sticking to her vampires, werewolves and witches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anne Rice Explores BDSM In Fine Detail Of The World Of Fairytales, Think Brothers Grimm, Not Disney
Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2019

This book is written with an amazing world filled with detail in time and place. Anne Rice explores the world of fairytales and erotica. I can only imagine the layout of the bible for the setup and telling of this story and its series. The characters are well conceived and the place is very original in context and layout. This is a world filled with consequence and the building of characters who are born to reign in the kingdoms they come from. This story is more than charm and charisma but loads of complications for the characters that exist within the realm and historical sphere of Rice's kingdom. I agree with the reviews of Playboy and The Advocate: ""Articulate, baroque, and fashionably pornographic." —Playboy and ""Something very special . . . at once so light and yet so haunting." —The Advocate... A definitive description of this very involving story. This telling is serious and graphic, not a happily ever after tale until Book 3 and questionable to use that as a description of the telling of this story.

When one party is enjoying it while the other party is afraid and in tears it is just torture, not erotica.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rape, rape, and more rape

I'm all for people exploring their sexuality, but nothing in this book is consensual. The opening scene is rape. Then there's more rape. Oh and for good measure there's some more rape and lots of spanking thrown in. There's good BDSM (consensual) and then there's this.

Dreadful. Next to no plot. Repetitive: spank, spank, spank. Then spank. This book dwells on non-consensual cruelty, pain, degradation, and humiliation. Nope.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tedious and sad tale with no redeeming value
Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2019

I am an avid reader, and have been for many years. I’ve read a variety of genres and, for the most part, enjoyed them. Even those that I ended up not liking had some good parts -- something to recommend them. With this book, however, I found a long-winded, sad, plodding tale of degradation with no redeeming value whatsoever. By the first third of the book I was hoping for something good; I plowed on. By the second third, I was beginning to suspect all hope was gone; I plowed on, unwilling to cry, “Uncle!” Unfortunately, by the time I reached the last page, there was nothing to make me want to continue with the next book in the trilogy. If I could give zero stars, I would. If I could get my money back, I would ask for it. My advice: save your money and don’t waste your time. There are many thousands of good books “out there” that are worth buying and reading. This isn’t one of them.

1.0 out of 5 stars By same author who wrote “Interview with a Vampire”?
Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2019

Barely could get through. Skimmed mostly just because was hoping that it would somehow get better. I should have followed my own tenant of “if after a couple chapters and it’s not enjoyable, put it aside. Too much to read to waste time on drivel.” The story is sophomoric, the characters are unrealistic, and not at all romantic — maybe my only reaction: revolting — and then it just all became redundant. Definitely not Sleeping Beauty and definitely not a good read. I’m still doubting that this was written by Anne Rice, the same author who wrote “Interview with a Vampire”...? Where was the tension, the plot, the intense characterizations, the intrigue?
