Despite bleak disillusionment, Guy Crouchback comes through. Waugh ends Sword of Honour on a hopeful note, but not after some gloriously sentimental episodes. The funeral of Guy's father moved me to tears, so much of it reminded me of my own father.
Waugh not so subtly skewers various WW2 leaders and the lemming-like willingness of the masses to accept bogus symbols as propaganda, principally the 'Sword of Honour' itself. Guy has prevailed but recognizes his surrender to the new age.
