I am a history buff but knew nothing of the 1600's, which was a shame since this was a very important period of history. The citizens of Grantville need to survive the 30 year war to which they have been transported. The books in this series are hit or miss with the good ones being outstanding. You will gain a good understanding of how much our modern sensibilities have changed in 400 years. The 1600's is the early modern period where many of our basic concepts first came into being.
I bought the book because I am a fan of scifi and alternate histories. I thought I would learn something about the 30 years war! After a passable beginning, and just tolerable amount of naïve American patriotism, the whole thing turned soft-p**n, where blue eyes met brown eyes and fell instantly in love, brown eyes met green eyes and fell instantly in love, carnal satisfaction was delayed until thoroughly consumed. This went on over several chapters! Geez! Ok, it is entertaining to some extent, for those with a fair bit of cringe tolerance.
