My husband loves railroad mysteries and this is his favorite railroad series. Although the books do not have trains through much of the individual books, they set the scene and according to my husband, the detective is really well written and he (my husband) gets absorbed into these books and cannot put them down. I will be reading them also. We have kept every book in the series, which we don't often do with books.
While I enjoy the books, some of the characters are tedious, namely Madeleine's father. Sergeant Leeming also needs to grow. His constant complaining about being away from his family is childish, especially considering his line of work. Mr. Marston hasn't allowed his characters to change much in the 8 books I've read.
