First: READ DOOMFARERS OF CORAMONDE FIRST!
This is rather necessary since many of the plot lines were developed there and will seem odd or plot-hacks if you haven't read the first book of the series.
Coramonde is a world similar to ours, and maybe was once more advanced than ours before the forces of (literally) Hell tried to destroy the whole thing. It didn't work. In one sense this is a dystopian world, fallen back to swords and spears from higher levels of life.
King Springbuck is faced with a problem. An infant, rescued from Hell, needs to go home. His friend, an ex-Army sergeant named Gil McDonald, wants to deal with a rather serious enemy named Yardiff Bey ( a hostile sorcerer) personally and lethally.
So why not combine both into one adventure? They set out from Earthfast, the capital of Coramonde, to return the child and a sword to their rightful keepers.
And the story gets better from there.
This is my second copy of the story; the first one is over fifty years old and somewhat falling apart. Thus, I bought the kindle version. Why? Because I read this series at least once every year, it's that continuously entertaining.
Sadly, there will be no third book for this series because the author Brian Daley, passed away. That in no way diminishes the story he told, or any of his other novels.
Remember, Doomfarers of Coramonde is first and necessary to make this part of the story work properly. Believe me, buying the two stories is worth it if you enjoy Heroic Fantasy with a slightly sideways twist.
