Although I didn't like this second book of the series as much as the first, it is a decent read. The story of three sisters who run away from an abusive father tells the story of Nell this time. The year is 1910 and the setting Swindon, England.
Nell is the 21-year-old middle sister who has become pregnant by her boyfriend Cliff. She is running away to marry him and it has been decided she and he will take in her 16-year-old sister Renie.
Life is not as Nell had hoped as she and Cliff and up in a neighboring town to set-up house. The
The cycle of abuse and poverty continue and women are treated like dependent children/house slaves. The descriptions of life for a woman in this era is mind boggling as grown women are dismissed as second class citizens and mentally incapable of independence.
This is a good enough series to recommend to readers of historical fiction. I plan to read the last book in the trilogy.
