Linda Gillard's books never fail to touch me and make me think and even reconsider certain long-held beliefs. Each time I read one of her novels, I think, oh, this one is the best - but, really, they are all wonderful! If you have yet to discover her books, do yourself a very big favor and begin right here with Star Gazing! I guaranty it will not be the last book of her's that you will read!! Gillard is an amazingly perceptive writer. She never shys away from difficult subject matter. In this book, her main character is blind. Gillard's excellent writing and deep empathy allowed me
to plunge into the experience of being sightless. Her metaphor of "sight" through music was a brilliant way to reveal this. I found myself reading passages aloud to my husband because I just had to share them! Her characters are always very real - and flawed - and, through her writing, we are allowed into their flawed lives, and feel their pain. I am not in any way suggesting that her books are depressing - just the opposite!! Each one is full of hope and redemption. Every one of Ms Gillard's novels is a gem, filled with real challanges, love, and humor! She has quite a following in Great Britain and deserves a large American audience, as well! I highly recommend Star Gazing, and every single other novel she has written!
