The Black is the second installment in the Morpheus Road series which tells Cooper Foley's story. This book answers many of the questions from the first book and gives more insight into the realm called the Black. Once again I chose the audiobook version of this series which is performed by Nick Podehl. I enjoyed the Black but not quite as much as the first book. This book seemed to drag a bit perhaps because many of the events had already taken place in the first book but were now being told from a different point of view. Cooper added a new perspective to the story but since the events had already been revealed the journey wasn't quite as exciting this time around. I liked most of the main characters in the book, other than Damon who is the villain, particularly Maggie and Cooper of course. Although, Cooper has a bit of an ego he is fiercely loyal and brace. The end of the Black leaves the reader with a quest that is to be pursued so I'm looking forward to the conclusion of this trilogy. While The Black wasn't quite as good as Morpheus Road it was still a solid read and worthy of 3.5 stars.

D.J. MacHale never disappoints. I have read the entire Pendragon and SYLO series. So when I saw that this book was out and available, I knew I was in for a nail biting, page turning adventure. He always does a FANTASTIC job with character development and putting you right in the shoes of the main character.
Anyone who likes cliff hangers, suspense, slight romance and a bunch of “Nope nope nope F that!” psychological thriller moments will definitely enjoy this book series. Can’t wait to read book two and three.
It is funny, I started reading this series because I thought it was too scary for my son. I enjoyed the first book "The Light" which made me read the second part "The Black". I actually enjoyed the second book in this series The Black more than the first part. I think that is mainly because of the view of "the other side." It was interesting to "see" the author's view of what it is like after we die. There was alot of action in the book and I enjoyed getting to know this other main character, from the first book. I recommend reading the series. I can't wait to start the third and final book in the series "The Blood". Although this book was written for the tween to teenager, it can still peak the interest of an adult. For parents screening for their kids, there is no blood and gore in this book. The books may be scary more so if your child has a very visual imagination. If they are the type, like myself, who sees what is happening in the book then they may sleep with the lights on a few nights.

I've been following DJ since his Pendraon series and have loved all the care and attention he brings to building the world's around his characters. A lot of people complain that this series doesn't have a lot of answers and I think that is the point so we keep reading. I'm ready to read The Blood and see where the Morpheus Road ends. The Black gave us a in depth look at what happened from Cooper's POV. And to me the interesting part was figurines out what spirit did what during Marsh's haunting. We learned a lot. Not everything but a lot. Let's find out the rest shall we?
It was amazing how D.J. MacHale tied this second story in the Morpheus Road series to the first. The two stories actually run in parallel - The Light is Marsh's story, The Black is basically the same story from Cooper's perspective. I read these first two stories back-to-back and plan to start the third book, The Blood, today. MacHale is a phenomenal writer. He has a true gift for storytelling. I highly recommend this series. Great for anyone 12 and over!!!
(And if you haven't read his Pendragon series, you are seriously missing out on some great writing!)
My 8th grade boys like this series. I only had the first book from an author's visit to our school several years ago. Several kids asked for the next book in the series and I didn't have them, nor did our school library. So, being a complete sucker for a kid who actually wants to read a book, I bought this for my students and I have a list of kids waiting to read it. I should have ordered a few. I haven't read any of the books in the series, so I can only say that my boys seem to really like them.

DJ MacHale writes an awesome book for young adults. The Pendragon series was wonderful and the Morpheus Road series lived up to that standard. My husband and I read them along with our teenage grandson - it's a wonderful sharing opportunity, especially during the teenage years. The material is easily enjoyed for adults. The story line is full of unexpected twists and turns, the characters are believable and there's a small tie to the Pendragon books which I found delightful. My grandson devoured the whole series, reading a book in 1 or 2 days. I highly recommend the book - you won't be disappointed.
