This book is both amusing and informative, and surprisingly ahead of its time in my own opinion. Apart from the modern impact of pervasive toxins, pesticides, herbicides, and massive nutrient depletion from our soils- Mr. Blythe's personal weightloss strategy of reducing portions without depriving one's self of the foods they love and are used to eating, quitting alcohol, and taking regular exercise, are spot-on. An amusing and worthwhile read!
This old newspaperman from the early part of the last century might just turn your weight loss efforts around for good with his honest assessment of how he got fat (eating and drinking too much) and how he got thin (cut his food intake by 40 % in the morning, stopped eating lunch, and cut dinner intake by 60%). I also found it enlightening that even back in the first decade of the 20th century people were inundated with one new diet craze after another which he felt were necessary to debunk in favor of his simple eat less and move more plan.
Didn't love this book... the author basically advocates the use of will power, changing one's mind, to diet successfully... He reduced portion sizes and cut out alcohol and that was about it. I don't believe this method will work for most modern humans. Will power is a serious issue in modern life. Happy reading~*
Bottom line...spoiler alert...Mr. Blythe stopped drinking alcohol, cut his food intake by 60%, and took relaxing walks and lost 55lbs. in 5 months. I don't drink, but I see the merit in what he says. I've cut calories and have had nights where I'm starving & gave in. I'm 5'7 & 278.8lbs, morbidly obese. I'm gonna give this a shot & come back in September, 2013, & let you know if I took off 55lbs like Mr. Blythe.
90% of this book was saying that his method worked for him but it might not work for anyone else. A bunch of hammering home the fact that he's not responsible if we lose nothing. Then 1 page of method. One. Page.
Begin trying this... One egg, half an apple, one slice of dried toast and coffee for breakfast. No lunch or a very small plain salad w/o dressing. Dinner portions reduced by 60% - 1/3 cup rice instead a 1 cup, 8 oz glass of water
