It is very intense on action, the info dumps are not heavy (they do not stall the book's pacing). There is a proto Jack Ryan type in the book and other good characters.
A fantastic book plenty of action ,great characters a fantastic insite to modern warfare Tom Clancy is a master storyteller theorem with r3 and other great writers
I hope I don't insult anyone, but I am not a Tom Clancy fan. I read a couple of his books and was not impressed but someone told me about this book that piqued my interest. First of all, I work in the field, and I am fascinated with modern battlefield tactics. Even though this book was written in the 80s, I'm shocked how accurate he was. How did he know so much about what armies and navies had. I love the way this book was written. Though there is a running story, the emphasis here is on the technology. Actually, the technology are the true characters and the people around them are just the supporting cast. Tom made you feel you were really in each battle but at the level of a key decision maker. You saw how each battle influenced the overall strategy. It's amazing that he wrote this so long ago, but yet Russia is doing the exact same thing today in the Ukraine. Almost spooky. You can learn so much in this book about how military solutions work such as electronic warfare, sonar, radars and combat fighting. But you're always looking at the battle scenes from a top-ranking officers’ point of view. I promise you, you will not be bored. I think the only thing he could have added were the geo-politics. He does mention the Russian side but skips what was happening at the American executive branch side. I think that would have been very interesting, but the book is still awesome.
This is the only book I’ll read over again. About once every ten years I’ll come back to it and it’s more poignant today than ever before given a surprisingly parallel world events.
Although the premise of the story is flawed, the action is realistic. Clancy has created a thriller that grabs you and holds you to the last page. I’m looking forward to reading another in this series and other Clancy based books.
Far beyond my pay grade is criticism of one of the greatest writers of our day and age. It is erie to read a book of fiction, written near 30years ago that could be torn from today's headlines as the madman Putin launches an invasion of a neighboring country and both Biden and Putin allow the word NUCLEAR to cross their lips! Let's pray for an outbreak of SANITY!
This is forth or fifth time I have been a bit more involved with this book. I miss Tom Clancy's writing and the entertainment of his stories. I enjoy his style and his ability to make you feel like you are actually being a part in the story.
Really enjoyed reading this. I was surprised it was out of print and a poor secondhand copy was all I could get.... but it was worth it.... an enjoyable read, the author must have a well polished crystal ball at home maybe I should ask him for next years Prix de l'arc winner...... if there is a next year...... if there is a Europe.... if we are still here!
I read this excellent book when it was first published, and I lent it to someone and never got it back. I accidentally came across a review a few days ago and sent for a new copy. Don’t think I can read it at the moment. It’s too close to the current situation.
Not the genre I usually read, but have been given so many recommendations that I had to give it a try.
Glad I did, but I should give some fair warning if you're looking to purchase this: - At times, it can be very technical. NOT A BAD THING, but I did struggle reading this before bed. I found it much more enjoyable when I could give it a decent 2-3 hour reading on weekends. - Tense and realistic. As others have noted, it's all seems plausible - I bought in quite fast. - Personally, I enjoyed the parts where people were talking more than the warfare engagements. They were really well written, but I was always left wanting more of that.
I do recommend this, but I do think it requires some persistence. I was very tempted to put this down when it started getting technical. If you like the technical side, you'll probably find this an easy 5-star read.
What would a European based WWIII have been like in the nuclear age? OK it didn`t, but... Tom Clancy (RIP) sets a believable scenario where the USSR MUST take territory to survive (without losing face!). What follows is an amazing series of tales within a whole that runs a riot of sucess/failure, leading to? Being English, it`s appreciated that THIS time we get (an honourable!) mention. With CGI being so prevelant these days, this would make a fantastic film, maybe ala Lord of the Rings, but sorry, no Superheroes, so maybe not. Yes, I`ve read this before, but it`s one of those! Recommend ANY early TC, not too keen on `ghosts`.
I like war books but this is too detailed for me and far too many acronyms! I left out large chunks as the technical side wasn't for me. Amazing to think that this was written in the 80's.
