I am a Sherlock Holmes fan, but I've never been that fond of those books that are basically just exploitative of the tradition. If you can't come up with an original idea of your own, don't steal Conan Doyle's, write an inferior story, and then sit back and hope to make a bundle of money off it!
This series is not like that. Yes, it starts with some of the characters from the Sherlock Holmes stories, but my guess is that Mr. Trow is a fan, not a copy-artist. There is a lot of humor, and lots of references for Holmesian fans to chuckle at, but the stories are stand-alone and do not disappoint. I was initially a little hesitant to buy this when it showed up on Kindle deals, just because of those inferior copycats, but I'm glad I did. The story was good, and the writing did not make me want to throw the book at the wall (something I would never do anyway - why blame the poor book for the bad writing!).
Go ahead - take a chance - buy it!
