5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and unique

Julia Sweeney has great talent. She relates her "de-conversion" story in a funny, non offensive way. I can totally relate to many of her experiences. It is also eye-opening and will lead you to think critically and rationally in a non-threatening way. I highly recommend it for those who want to honestly follow reason and not childhood indoctrination. It is better to have questions that cannot be answered, than having answers that cannot be questioned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully and Humorously Articulated

If you've struggled with moving on from a belief in God instilled in you from an early age, Julia Sweeney’s beautifully articulated perspective offers a camaraderie you may not find among your God-believing family and friends. It’s wonderful that she gives the subject matter over two hours worth of thoughtful consideration, because as you listen to her, you want to hear more. This is such a well-worded routine so well executed that I will listen to again.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great audio book
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 18, 2015
This is a great audio book. My voyage into rational thought was much different and occurred when I was much younger - OK, rational thought may be a bit of an overstatement, I was 12. I have grown in my reasoning since and while I was atheist long before hearing Julia and her adventure it gave me a reason to feel good about and not in the least bit empty.

I can't speak for other non-believers, but I am made, as Pascal or was it Bertrand Russell said, so that I cannot believe. Julia fills her fear of an emptiness with something astoundingly great that helped me look at the world in a new light. For me, and I suspect many who do not believe, she will do the same.

We are all tempted to find ways to convince our god fearing family and friends that there is a reality and no need to look for reason in myth. This is always a hard sell - some are "made to believe", but of all the arguments, in your face, rationale, how can you believe that sh#$, I have not seen a more compelling story that "could" convince anyone in a more reasonable, human, and non-confrontational way. Julia's humor dulls the edge of the message and means that even the most devout will listen, but you will need to give it a plane brown wrapper. Through is on CD and rename :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the Faithful
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 17, 2014
No one who wishes to reaffirm and deepen a faith in the God of the Bible ought to read this book. Julia Sweeney's devastating sense of humor in portraying the ridiculousness of religious thinking is such that I would not expect a sincere seeker of faith to retain his/her faith intact after reading this book. Only an abiding devotion to retaining a deep denial of reality could save such a person from the ravages of rational thinking. Consider this as a warning if it would bother you to become an atheist!! On the other hand, if you are already an atheist, Julia Sweeney will have you ROFL during the entire reading experience ... but you will have to bite your tongue especially hard when you encounter anyone whose loss of faith would be bad for their evolutionary survival.

This is one of the most sensible, entertaining books available. Julia walks you though every single thing that has been sitting at the back of your mind and exposes it. She is charming and entertaining.
