2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected

This had some great reviews but I don't know why. This could have been a great story but the author dis not put it together very well.
The first 30 some pages are the main character talking about himself over and over again. All about the same things. After that the book actually started into the story (not a bio anymore) so I got pretty interested. Then it dies all over again. Chapter 4 is 90 some pages long and it is all about the angel telling you about the main character again!! The angel is suppose to be showing main character his life. That is not how this dreadfully long chapter is written. The angel reassures main character that it's going to be more real than anything he's ever experienced but not to worry cause he is there with him. Then just starts talking. No description of anything just a character going over the life of another character. You can literally take out the first 30 some pages and this whole chapter and the book would be better.

As a fan I have gone on many journeys with you, and although I loved your witchy and vampire tales this one has won me over... As we mature we find ourselves on a journey to reconnect with the Devine and this story is crafted in such a way to resemble the conflict of that journey. Kudos to you ❤

4.0 out of 5 stars More a return to form after her Christ novels

I felt that her last book of the vampires wasn't written in her usual 'voice.' I can forgive her for that, since her husband died that year. That caused me to leave off reading her novels for some time. When I finally got around to reading her Christ novels, I found them a little dry and still out of character for her (though the second one was better). In this novel, it seems she is returning to her old self. Not quite there, but still much improved over her last three works. It was a quick and easy read leaving me wanting more. I found the time traveling stuff reminiscent of Dark Shadows and the main mortal and angel characters reminded me of characters from Supernatural. (Both shows that I love) As of posting this review, I have just ordered the sequel to this book. Anne masterfully crafts what I would consider the most important part of a good story - character development. Can't wait for more. And I plan on getting to her werewolf novels afterwords.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing new tale: a new beginning

I read many bad reviews for this book and the second book that follows it. I read them both very quickly and loved them. Fans of Anne Rice will remember she once wrote about angels in her novel Vittorio the Vampire. However, these angels are different. What I loved most about Angel Time is the fact that time doesn't really exist as we think it does, to the angels--prayers are always heard, and there is always some chance to answer them. This is where the main character comes in and starts a new beginning. The story goes back to medieval times where the main character is charged by an angel to help some people. Don't worry about the negative reviews; though Rice is no longer writing about vampires and witches, she still has the gift to charm with incredible tales.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read

I have read Anne's vampire books and this book is more cleanly and skillfully written. It is about an assassin and an angel, and this theme is consistent throughout the book from the very beginning as it builds the plot and comes to its satisfying conclusion. It is not at all boring or slow. The main character is average joe assassin, a poisoner who takes pride in his work, and he is easy to relate to, as are the characters in the historical time period described. This book deals successfully with the deeper moral questions of all good literature, in this case God's mercy, forgiveness and redemption, and does it in a way you will not soon forget. Thank you, Anne.

4.0 out of 5 stars The path of a damned soul to heaven.

Toby is an unlikely host to an angel. He has worked as an assassin for years, entrusting the fact that those he killed deserved to die in the greater good. He has amassed great wealth, but is now visited by an angel who takes him through time to work off the sins he has accrued.
As in all Rice's books, the settings are lush beyond compare and the beauty of the worlds of this wealth are worth the visit aside from the animate subjects.
Toby is a complex character, again a Rice hallmark. The whole nature of good and evil is never a subject Rice shies from. This makes her work a constant source of thought as well as enjoyment.

I was looking forward to reading the recent change in her writing. This book did not disappoint. She still masters the art of plot and character. I had grown tired of the dark alienation in previous works, She likes to pose deep questions about good and evil.
The answer, for her, is seldom black and white. She espouses atonement;this bookk was not without redemption, and opens the door to sequel.

What a fantastic book. I have long loved Anne Rice and all she has written. This is a story that combines my love of history and a great novel. This is a book that I was proud to recommend to my mother who in turn recommended it to friends. After reading this I quickly devoured the sequel.

If you love the way Anne Rice writes, you will enjoy reading this book. Personally, i didn't enjoy it as much as her more famous novels. That's because i'm an atheist. I find it difficult to even imagine there's a god let alone one that would interact with humankind. That said, Anne Rice can transport me to places i've never seen. Her descriptions are so rich and her story telling so brilliant that i can enjoy anything she writes. I have already bought the next book so will be starting that as soon as i finish this review.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not yet back to her best

Anne Rice's novels have slipped off the boil over the last few years and whilst this wasn't as bad as I expected, it was poorly executed. Her style seems to have changed to be less verbose and brief, which at least makes the book shorter.

I liked Toby's character but he was still a pale imitation of Lestat. The end section of slipping into Jewish medieval England was dire and drawn out. Couldn't Anne have picked a meatier dilemma for Toby's first mission than a young girl's unmysterious death?

That said, the book clearly has succession and I can see Toby developing in future books. This doesn't read like Anne Rice and I would never have known it was written by her if I was reading it blind.

This book had great potential but sadly, like Rice's other latter novels, it simply didn't deliver. I fear we will never see her best again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Confusing at times

Anne Rice writes this in her typical style of a narrative of the character telling the story. The problem with this is rather than sticking to one character it chops backwards and forwards between characters. This can make things very confusing and lose track. It also makes it seem like a number of shorter stories rather than one and there is a definitive split in the book when this happens. The first half grabs your interest about the main character as you learn about his background and his personality. Then he becomes very much a secondary character and it loses it drive and appeal. The second half interested me due to it being based in Norwich, the city i come from and has some interesting histroical stories that i went on to research myself. This is why i have given it 4 stars rather than 3 due to it raising my personnel interest in Norwich that not all may find appealing. Overall this story starts off with an interesting start but loose's it drive and focus in the middle.

Having come to thisbook this via Anne Rice's Vampires and Witches I can't fail to recognise her voice and feel the tender love for people in general and her fallen protagonists in particular. For an AR addict this book is yet another treasure.

3.0 out of 5 stars Close, but no Vampire

Anne Rice made her reputation with the Vampire Chronicles and in Lestat she had an anti-hero who out-bit Edward Cullen by a country mile. Quite rightly she closed the book on her creatures of the night, probably later than she should, but no doubt there was publisher and reader pressure to continue. She has tried to re-create franchises with other supernatural beings, such as 'The Servant of the Bones' but when fans measured it against the Vampire Chronicles they found them wanting. Will Angel Time: The Songs of the Seraphim 1 work? Maybe. The storyline was actually quite good, although it didn't have the punch of 'Interview with the Vampire' and Toby O'Dare isn't anything like Lestat. A hit man who feels sorry for himself and had a rotten upbringing.... But. I'm just interested enough to read a sequel, so Anne Rice must be doing something right.
