Some books are worth more in their affect on the heart than they are on the senses. This book is one of those. Though I've read many stories, some of them splendidly written, this story touches a place inside that changes you. The storyline itself was at time ponderous. Much detail was given to the city of St. Louis, to the main character's friends, and to her school and her job, and though this did set the stage for the overall personality of the character, for me, someone now familiar with that time period of that city, it was a little much. Yet oh how the truth of God's Word shines though. I have been at the bottom of life, and although my story is different from this particular one, the battle upward is the same, and it was brilliantly portrayed. I cried that any child anywhere would ever have to go through something so horrible as physical and sexual abuse, and rejoiced that there is a God who cares. Wonderful writing, this is a book I highly recommend.
I heard this audio book, and it was such a blessing to me. Two very special friendships enter the life of a lonely, abused girl and change it forever. Where once things were bleak, hopeless and sad for this little girl, a penny she finds by chance opens doors she never dreamed possible. This is a story of victory over defeat, and love conquering fear and emptiness. I enjoyed this thoroughly and recommend it for mature readers. The subject of sexual abuse makes this unsuitable for young readers.
I'm amazed at the glowing reviews for The Penny. Forgiveness is vital to all Christians, but forgiveness, in this book, was couched in very simplistic terms. The act of forgiveness does not negate the awful things that were done to Miss Shaw and Jenny. Also, where were the consequences for the horrific behavior of Jenny's father? It was all tied up too neatly at the end of the story.
The Penny is awesome. Once I picked it up,it was very hard to put down. In fact, I read the whole book in 3 days. The words on the pages opened my heart and my spiritual eyes. This book is a confirmation that God is still on the throne and is always working behind the scenes (even when our situations dictate otherwise)! The authors do an excellent job in keeping the reader interested. The book reminds me that not everything that happens to me or around me is my fault. Now, when I see a penny, I'm reminded that God has a purpose and plan for my life and it will be fulfilled, no matter what the circumstances are currently.
