4.0 out of 5 stars A fascianting read with a caveat

I enjoyed this one a lot along with the original Lestat book. I love all the rich history and detail My caveat is that how Marius seems to use almost exclusively the word "child" when talking to any of his acolytes and how they are very young while also talking about being in love with them cuddling, kissing .... a lot of that kind of talk after calling someone "child" got a but creepy. It's done enough, frequently enough for it to speak to a weird creepy glitch in Rice's own persona. I could do without that. No one seems to be older than about fourteen. She might want to look into that a bit. I wonder how a 1500 year plus Marius is so captivated by tweens as potential soul mates and partners in eternity.

5.0 out of 5 stars The story of Marius born in ancient Rome
Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2019

One of my favorite of Anne Rice's vampires Marius tells of his beginnings in ancient Rome, how he came in possession of and carried the burden of caring for Those Who Must Be Kept, Akasha and Enkil "mother and father' to all vampires, and how he dared lived among humans and create his fledgling Armand until disaster struck and he was almost destroyed. This is an amazing story that passes through the centuries to modern times.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor condition

When ordering hard cover, expected to receive nice quality book. However it looks like it was ripped out of printing machine. And the bubble envelope it was in didn’t protect the cover from bending. Two stars for the condition of the book. I love Anne Rice and pretty sure the book is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marius in the Mirror
Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2018

Absolutely one of my favorite books in the chronicles. I have read and reread this book through the years. Marius echoes in some ways how I feel I would be if I was immortal. He is the watcher of history, the student of humanity, and shows his suffering as he deals with trying to make sense of immortal relationships. Thoroughly enjoyable!

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyers Beware. Cheap bookcover.

I was disappointed when I first opened my package. The book cover had low quality picture and it does not have embossed title/author font like the Blackwood Farm book that I had. It is cheap material as I was not pleased about that.

Fantastical story, covering times of The Roman Empire, to the Renaissance, and beyong, through possibly the wisest eyes of immortality, Marius. History, beautiful literature, and vampires! Something for everyone.

The author extended the saga far too long. Its not a bad book, but its far from being great. The plot seams too weak at times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Anne Rice book in several years
Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2001

Not since The Vampire Lestat has Rice lived up to her potential in The Vampire Chronicals. This is clearly the best of them since then. Several new characters of real note are introduced. Chief among them is Thorne, who is as much a warrior as Marius is a magician. Deceptively simple and direct he turns out to be more complicated and certainly more powerful than one might expect. The chapter on the encounter between Marius and the beautiful and sinister Eudoxia is the best chapter in the chronicals since the rock musicial phase of Lestat. If you love The Vampire Chronicals, but have been disillusioned with them of late, this one will restore your enthusiasm.

I absolutely love reading this book ever since I have received it a few years ago in hardback. With the paperback in hand, I can now have an easier time reading it, especially when I'm in bed.
