How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Science Presented in a Collouquial, Easy-toUnderstand Way

Before his retirement, Bob Altemeyer was a leading social science researcher and expert on the authoritarian personality -- people who are very submissive to authority and to a lesser extent to social dominance theory. This extraordinary book puts the research Bob Altemeyer spent his professional career pursuing into a slim volume, easily read and understood volume, for the nonscientist. The research results help me understand relatives and others who believe without question or at least whatever figures they regard as authoritative (Fox News, Pat Robertson, Trump), even when their favorite authority figure tells them completely contradictory things. It also helped me understand why certain far Right organizations are so often led by "unreliable" (and not infrequently, psychopathic) leaders -- like Jim and Tammy Faye Baker, Jimmy Swaggart, Pat Robertson, etc.) Someone needs to convince the copyright holder to make this volume available on Kindle and Nook!

This book is excellent if you want to understand how so many people can believe outrageous lies told by authorities. The author explains how even blatant contradictions can be swallowed by followers. The most amazing thing: it was written in 2006!
Don’t be put off because the author used scientific methods to come to his conclusions. The author has a great sense of humor and you will enjoy learning about aspects of your own personality.

I'm on my second listen of this book. I value the insights and the science behind them. Professor Altemeyer's relaxed reading of his own material makes this information an enjoyable listen. More importantly, his explanation of the difference between a conservative outlook and an authoritarian personality has enabled me to understand how a vocal, fearful minority can shout down the civil discussions and nuanced outlook of a less fearful, less forceful majority.

I have been recommending this book to liberals and conservatives alike. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Explains Why America Has Often Elected Dolts and Thugs
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 27, 2010

Why do Americans so often send imbeciles and gangsters to the republic's highest elective offices? Altemeyer's research and findings provide highly credible explanations.

Since there are already plenty of sound synopses of Altemeyer's work on these web pages, I see no need to add another. But I will say this:

"Must reads" seldom are. This one is. Buy it, read it (or listen to it) and pass it on. To say that Altemeyer's work demands a MUCH wider audience is quite the understatement.

Everyone needs to read this to learn why we are in this national crisis. I learned about this author when reading John Dean’s “Conservatives Without Conscience”, another valuable book to read right now.
