This was my first read by Soto and I was very excited to start, seen as this book was describe as dark romance and that is one of my top favorite genres. The hype for this book made my expectations that more higher but unfortunately those expectations weren’t met after finishing this story.
The first 10 chapters were super dark, intense, hard to swallow and excellent to suck you in if you’re a lover of dark romances. It brings the topic of sex trafficking and all the abuse and exploitation that comes with it. After those chapters Sofia (our leading lady) is rescue by a group of mercenaries. Sofia’s brother Garret is part of this group and she wasn’t aware of this information. Sofia developed feelings for one of her rescuers, Creed. A very sexy, brooding and dark angel. After the rescue the story takes a turn, becomes in my opinion, more of a romantic suspense than a dark romance. You keep waiting for something to happen.
More than 50% of the story is about Sofia’s days in her new place of captivity because her brothers keeps her secluded for her protection. I couldn’t believe how well she cope with the new place, closed spaces and all the big scary men after the ordeal she endure for 9 months. I expected her to have more of a hard time accepting that she would be onces more secluded and even couldn’t see the light of day. The slow part of the story included her daily routines of reading, cooking and thinking of the brooding dark angel that hided in the shadows. Also trying to decipher if this man, the object of her desires really feel something for her.
Her relationship with Creed is kind of forbidden and a push and pull. By the last 2 chapters you finally get to see them actually act of their feelings and then bang a new turn of events that leave you with a new and unexpected enemy. The book finished with a cliffhanger that I’m still trying to comprehend. Trying to see where everything connected and makes sense to me.
