There is something magical in the warmth and joy the Aunt Dimity series evokes : so Christmas-like! Although the village of Finch is experiencing drab and dreary weather and an outbreak winter colds it doesn't take long for Atherton to transform it all into a gentle merry place with her goodhearted characters and some pleasant sleuthing. Lori, who is the serie's chief "detective" and gossip, and cookie fancier is atypically laid-back and responsible and for once is not jumping to a billion ill-founded concusions when she and some other guests at a storm bound Christmas party guests make a remarkable discovery in a hidden room. All the regular characters and a few from previous novels make their appearance. Frankly, the folks from the past, some unexpected happy events for long standing characters, and Lori's new found restraint gave me the uneasy feeling that this would be a good way for Nancy Atherton to end the series. I hope this isn't so! Hete's to many more, happy, enjoyable, peaceful hours with our fictional friends!

While I'm still not certain of the Jack and Bree storyline, the resulting love stories explored in this novel are sweet and heartwarming - just right for a Christmas time book, suitable for reading any time of the year! New and old loves are explored, history is taught, and family and friends are celebrated. Definitely best read as part of the series as the history of the characters gives a depth that would otherwise be missed and your reading experience would be poorer for the lack. But for those of us who've been enjoying since the beginning, I found this one to be a strong entry in the series (I've read it twice already today and am considering starting it again tonight.)

Nancy Atherton's AUNT DIMITY AND THE HEART OF GOLD continues the antics of Lori, her family and friends both old and new, on another new adventure-- this time solving how a Victorian era Hindu alter ended up in an English countryside ,Tudor era mansion . Solving the mystery provides just the right diversion while most of the villagers are suffering from a nasty virus that has put a damper on their Holiday festivities. Add in an ice storm, a stranded passerby, and thoughtful insight from Lori's Aunt Dimity, and you have all the ingredients for a delightful reading experience.
Aunt Dimity and Nancy Atherton have been favorites of mine since the first book. Lori and her family feel like old friends. This particular book is one of her best. Seeking information about a forgotten room and its contents leads Lori and her friends (plus a newcomer) to shed light on a time when life was not as free as it is now. Seeing Lori find the truth and solve a 19th century mystery. You will enjoy this book. The recipe is good too!
This was the first experience I had of the Aunt Dimity mysteries and it inspired me to start collection others in the series. It was just the right mix of mystery and coziness that felt just right for me. I now have three others and looking forward to acquiring more. I find it is fun to read cozy mysteries in order so that I can see how the repeat characters are fleshed out with each successive novel. If you are looking for graphic, gory details and horrific violence then this is not for you. Suitable for all ages. High recommended!

This was another winner. I have read every book in this series some twice. I love this author as she writes wonderful storylines and great characters. I highly recommend all her books to everyone who loves cozy mysteries and ghosts. Diana Romano
I absolutely love this series and this was one of my favorites. I have read all but one book in the series, and that one was an early one. I simply got lost in the characters and the story this time. I loved the romance, the details of the Heart of Gold, and the situation and setting. I loved learning about some history and always find in these latter books that the history of England is rich and a great choice for enriching the read. I hope this author writes many more for this series!
Unlike other reviews, I didn't like this story line at all. It was more like a history lesson & I never finished the entire book. I did enjoy all the previous stories & very disappointed with this one.
